Ivy Exec recently interviewed the co-founders of Dominion Business Solutions, a management and IT consulting firm recently named a Consulting Magazine “Small Jewel.”  Dominion Business Solutions is based in Washington, DC and serves public sector and Fortune 2000 clients.

Ivy Exec: In which area of your company do you expect the most growth over the next 12 to 18 months?

Dan Maguire: Our focus remains on large-scale enterprise IT initiatives – including the initial IT Strategy and Architecture work around innovative, IT transformation programs. We do see this continuing to be a growth area for Dominion in the coming year. Specifically we are seeing increased interest in cloud-based solutions, business intelligence, enterprise architecture, and overall systems modernization.

IE: What changes and challenges do you think your company and industry will see in the next 5 years?

J.P. Foley: On the Federal side of our business, given that it is an election year, we anticipate major changes should there be a change of administration within the federal government.  There is already a significant amount of budget reduction and other consolidation occurring and should a new President be elected, changes will certainly occur. With that said, as a nimble small business, we just need to adapt within our Public Sector programs.  From a commercial perspective we are beginning to see new IT investments being made and more IT budget expenditures than in the last few years. We see this also as a change for the better and an opportunity for Dominion.

IE: What led you to found Dominion Business Solutions?

J.P: We built the company on the premise that we could provide high-end management and IT consulting services, and at the same time, create a workplace that will attract the high-level employee we desire. Our approach is a simple one in that we try to keep mundane overhead activities to a minimum and ask our employees to get involved in areas of the company of interest to them. For example, leading sales effort, recruiting and HR, and any other non-billable role that they want to learn about. Of course we also have regular employee outings and social functions to keep things light and maintain our corporate culture.

IE: What three words best describe your culture?

Both: Quality, Collaborative, Fun

IE: What are the two best perks that employees get at your company?

Dan:  Rapid career progression and a comprehensive benefits plan.

IE: Which leadership qualities best insure success at Dominion Solutions?

J.P.:  Teamwork is integral to our success. Our leadership team believes that everything we do is a team effort and that drives our success and results in a lead by example mentality and culture.

IE: What gets you excited about going to work each day?

Dan: The idea that we have built a company that our employees rely on for their career, income, and safety and that our clients truly benefit from our efforts.  In addition, knowing that as a small business we can truly optimize both our delivery approach and back office processes, minimizing the otherwise frustrating layers of overhead.

IE: Who is your pick for the World Series this year?

Dan: Washington Nationals; one can dream

J.P.: Nationals; OK, I’ll double down on the Nats – how about that pitching staff!
