Bob Krysiak, STMicroelectronics

Ivy Exec recently spoke with Bob Krysiak, Executive Vice President; President Americas Region at STMicroelectronics.  STMicroelectronics is a $10B, leading integrated device manufacturer.  Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, ST has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to research and development, dedicating nearly 25% of its revenue to the area.

Ivy Exec: In which area of your company do you expect the most growth over the next 12 to 18 months?

Bob Krysiak: ST is a large company with several diverse semiconductor businesses that are leaders in their segments. The most exciting areas for ST in the short- and mid-term are in the Consumer markets in what we call “Sense and Power.” Thanks to our new and innovative products, blue-chip existing customer engagements and our expanding customer base we’re anticipating growth in sensors, microcontrollers, and power management products that enable your consumer electronics—smartphones, tablets, and other applications—to interact with the environment and to operate using minimal power.

IE: What three words best describe your culture?

Bob: Technology, partnership, customer-focus

IE: What changes and challenges do you think your company and industry will see in the next 5 years?

Bob: The clearest challenge is to the industry’s ability to continue to follow Moore’s Law, the observation that the semiconductor industry has been able to double the number of transistors on a chip about every 18 months. At ST, we’re continuing down that path using several different strategies, including what we call “more Moore”—which is the traditional path of increasing miniaturization, and “More than Moore”—innovating in packaging technologies that allow us to put multiple products and technologies into a single package. We’ve got among the industry’s broadest portfolios of technologies and are well equipped to remain among the leaders.

IE: Which leadership qualities best ensure success at Company X?

Bob: The ST Leadership model focuses on building and reinforcing Vision, Results, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and People skills. With these skills, we see successful leaders as those able to manage products, technologies and customers on a global scale, to understand the industry, and to have outstanding insight into the products and technologies that will enable the future.

IE: What gets you excited about going to work each day?

Bob: We live in a world where electronics are becoming more pervasive and in every instance where electronics are making a positive difference to people’s lives, ST is contributing. We develop innovative solutions covering both Sense & Power and Multimedia Convergence that systematically focus on increasing the quality of life, enhancing the intensity of its experience and building on the potential for social improvement. We help enrich our customers’ products, to make them more efficient, more appealing, more reliable and safer. It doesn’t get any better than marshaling our resources and energizing the team to design our products into a customer’s applications.

IE: If you had to compare your organization to a car, what type would it be?

Bob: ST is like a well-constructed, expertly driven sports car; Quick, nimble and very responsive to the market and its partners.
