Scott Haug, Managing Partner of Waterstone Management Group

Scott Haug, Managing Partner of Waterstone Management Group

Ivy Exec recently interviewed Scott Haug, Managing Partner at Waterstone Management Group, a  boutique management consulting firm working exclusively with executives and private equity investors in the technology sector. Waterstone utilizes an expert-led model to help address issues such as revenue growth, new offering launch, value creation and operational improvement.

Ivy Exec: In which area of your company do you expect the most growth over the next 12 to 18 months?

Scott Haug: Given our primary focus around growth strategy and driving value creation initiatives for technology companies and their private equity investors, we see significant opportunities related to cloud computing, mobility, connected commerce/payments and a myriad of technology-related services. Clients are looking for support around opportunity identification and filtering, solutions/offer development, go-to-market and services strategy. Our clients increasingly place a premium on our bias for action/execution mindset and willingness to tie fees to results.

IE: What changes and challenges do you think your company and industry will see in the next 5 years?

Scott: Because most of our clients are within the technology and “connected commerce” sectors, the nature of how opportunities are being evaluated and ultimately captured requires having a balanced local versus global perspective, and an increasing need for compressed, highly iterative approaches to problem solving and ideation given the pace of innovation. Technology providers, especially established companies, are confronting major changes in their customers’ expectations – which in turn present significant stress on their business models. Waterstone’s challenge and opportunity is around our ability to continuously evolve our understanding of industry dynamics and changing market requirements so that we are well positioned to help our clients rapidly develop and execute well targeted solutions.

IE: What led you to join Waterstone?

Scott: Technology sector and growth focus, strong private equity “DNA”, entrepreneurial culture, highly talented team, and a group of individuals that all have “strong moral compasses”.

IE: What three words best describe your culture?

Scott: Innovative, Collaborative, Adventurous

IE: What are the two best perks that employees get at your company?

Scott Haug: a. Junior staff get to work closely with Partners
b. Even during the most intense moments – we still manage to have fun and treat each other with respect

IE: Which leadership qualities best insure success at Waterstone?

Scott Haug: Flexibility, strategic business acumen, entrepreneurial DNA, creativity, and bias towards action

IE: What gets you excited about going to work each day?

Scott: The complexity of the problems we address, the sophistication of our clients, and working within such a tremendously talent rich and non-hierarchical environment

IE: What little known hobby or personal interest do you enjoy?

Scott: Being founder and pro-bono CEO of a world class autism education program.
