Have you fallen out of love with your career?

Just like any relationship, your career will go through ups and downs. But how do you truly know when it’s time to break up with your career?

Every week I speak to multiple job seekers who know a break up is inevitable. They work for a company that simply does not treat them very well. Even though these job seekers are at different levels and different companies, their stories all sound the same:

“I gained 40 lbs. in the last 2 years due to the stress.”

“I had nice perks I didn’t want to give up.”

“I thought I would wait and see if the company could turn itself around. Plus there were projects I wanted to complete.”

“They keep asking me when I want to retire and to give them notice about it.”

In reality, they are all downplaying how horrible it’s really been for them. For many of them choosing to stay was like dating someone and thinking you’ll break up after the holiday – like Valentine’s Day – because you don’t want them to be hurt.

The truth is these people are all hurting themselves.

One woman hadn’t taken a vacation in 4 years because she felt pressured that things would fall apart without her. She was even missing out on her kids’ activities because of work travel.

Another didn’t even realize she was paying less attention to her husband because she was constantly answering email from her manager at all hours. Her wake-up call was getting let go!

Or here’s another common story, they were promised a promotion or bonus and it never came to fruition.

How long can you really last in a miserable position?

Whether it’s your employer or you, someone will make a change. Wouldn’t you rather it be you?
