Sara and Anne started the company with the idea that they wanted to provide an opportunity the greatest level of individual success for their staff while allowing staff to also prioritize their life. They do this, and then some. They are deeply committed to not only the success of their company, but also to those that work there, and we are establishing systems to ensure that this focus is retained as we grow. Beyond the culture-focus, the company is very much looked to and watched by the industry. We are working to maintain fluidity and flexibility in our skills and services that will be of greatest benefit to our clients looking forward. The landscape of our industry is quickly evolving; it is our ability to evolve that will continue to drive our success. Last, from a professional standpoint, individual growth is so important. There is no limit to what we can go after and do. Innovation is strongly encouraged (even if it means failure at first). All these factors combined - along with the smaller details that aren't making it to the surface of this commentary - contribute to ILLUME being a fabulous place to work. I recommend this company in all of my professional networks! When you work at ILLUME you feel like you are an important part of something exciting. The feeling I have of being valued and engaged is due in large part to the culture that the founders have created; a culture of creativity, a culture of kindness, a culture of excellence and a culture of appreciation. They live their values in every decision. They don't just pay lip service to allowing for a true work-life balance, they insist on it. They remind people to take their vacation, to feel free to take a break to pick up their kids, to flex their schedules if a project has been particularly grueling. The way they invest in their employees speaks volumes. When I was applying, I was expecting the usual haggle over salary (which women tend to always get the short end of the stick with) but instead they asked for a range and gave me the top of the range! That was such a testament to me that ILLUME is a different type of company-- they don't nickel and dime their employees, they truly support them. Recently, after some really difficult projects they surprised with a spot bonus just in appreciation of the extra effort I put into the project. This was a brilliant move, aside from being very appreciated! At a point where they knew I might be discouraged they turned it into a moment of celebration. I will stick with them for many years as a result of that simple move. As a woman, so often our efforts are either a) not recognized or b) recognition never turn into financial gains. At ILLUME they are so conscientious that they do this as part of their regular business.

They held the retreat in a beautiful lake house rather than around a conference table, which made us feel like a family. Although a relatively new and small firm, Anne and Sara have ingrained a culture of support that has not wavered. Support comes in many forms: support for creativity, support for doing the type of work people want to do, support for finding resources to be sure to not overwork or overburden staff, and support for family and outside-of-work life. In consultancy, where billable hours drives company profit (and as a result demands) this is unique for a company; many give the balance and support discussion lip service, but don't do it in practice. They do it in practice.

There is a commitment to integration of our staff and making the company the best to work. We recently held our annual retreat, where we flew all staff into our central office location to meet for two days. As part of the retreat we spent a considerable amount of time brainstorming, in small groups and as a full team, opportunities for improve (or reinforce) culture, connectivity with each other, and ensure our work is meeting our personal and professional needs. We, as a senior leadership team are moving very quickly on the ideas that came out of that retreat so we don't lose momentum and show we are taking staff input very seriously.
