Zymergen is partnering with nature to bring impossible products to market. These include improved and novel sources of proteins for animal feeds across a number of applications including poultry, swine, and aquatic. We are looking for an animal nutrition and health expert to support product development and commercialization for our lead products.
Job Description and Specific Responsibilities
Immediate responsibilities include:
Optimize product specs to maximize value creation for target market segment(s) across the portfolio
Run iterative feed formulations to maximize shadow price and inclusion rate
Review literature and engage with industry to recommend new nutritional factors to maximize functional value (e.g., lower FCR/FIFO)
Build and optimize animal nutrition models to inform how we can maximize value for livestock producer across products (including feed formulation, nutritional/health benefits, and end-product value)
Bridge priorities between commercial and technology platform (e.g., technical feasibility vs. value and time to market)
Design and execute animal trials strategy to de-risk portfolio and build data packages needed to support customer and partner discussions
Identify and contract with leading CRO/academics in key segments and geographies to conduct animal trials
Design, plan and execute animal trials experiments with CROs and academic partners (incl. contracting out external support needed)
Build a network of industry and scientific leaders that will advise and guide Zymergen in building a precision protein feed platform
Build a network of experts/consultants across each segment and in key geographies to provide specific vertical expertise when needed (i.e. manage 5-10 consultants across segments/geographies on retainers)
Establish advisory boards in selected target markets with industry and scientific leaders
Design, plan and execute advisory board strategy
Support sales and product development partner discussions
Provide technical and scientific support in partner and client discussions
The ideal candidate would have 8-10 years in feed ingredients or additives development experience, with experience in one or more livestock species, including aquatic species and a strong network of industry and academic thought leaders. Advanced degree preferred, with ideally a PhD in animal nutrition.
The candidate needs to have a broad set of scientific skills (design of experiments, statistics, feed formulation), well-established managerial experience (third party/vendor management), proven soft skills (influence without authority in a cross-functional environment, client leadership), and a problem solving mindset (ability to think past how things are currently done to how things might be done in the future).
Experience with formulation software preferred (e.g. Concept 5, etc.)
High-level knowledge of NASC and AAFCO regulation of animal feeds, supplements and feed ingredients
The candidate must be comfortable in a fast-moving environment with shifting priorities to quickly pivot and learn new subject matter as the portfolio strategy evolves.
The role will be based in our Emeryville campus. Up to 20% domestic and international travel will be required (partner and customer visits). We expect the individual to start building our animal health and nutrition capabilities (this would include but not be limited to academic and agriculture extension programs, building specific capabilities as the portfolio evolves, and identifying potential talents). Remote work will be considered for the ideal applicant.
