Associate Director- R&D Finance FP&A, Development Functions


Gilead Sciences is looking for an Associate Director to join R&D Finance FP&A, Development Functions team in Foster City, CA. In this role you will partner closely with Development Functions to help execute their mission and associated budgets by supporting investment prioritization and optimal resourcing. You will be a part of a global team that drives financial planning processes, generates insights and reporting, performs month-end close, actively manages risks and opportunities and leads scenario planning and resource management. As a member of a matrix organization, you will lead process improvement initiatives within your organization and R&D Finance, as well as influence key initiatives within Development Functions.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:



  • Establishing strong business partnerships with R&D Development business stakeholders to provide comprehensive financial support.

  • Conducting financial and resource modeling to support tactical and strategic decision making such as business case development, cost analysis, and sensitivity analysis.

  • Leading planning and month-end close cycles for the respective functional areas, ensuring accuracy and streamlined processes.

  • Managing the delivery of accurate and timely management reporting including functional expenses and resource reporting. 

  • Driving development of meaningful financial insights and creating effective presentations to communicate conclusions and recommendations to senior leadership.

  • Driving development and implementation of key process improvement initiatives including proactively engaging with Finance colleagues and business partners.

  • Providing advice and training to business partners on improvements to budget management.

  • Leading, executing or supporting various ad hoc projects/initiatives within Finance and business network.

  • The individual may directly manage and develop a professional staff.

Knowledge and experiences:



  • 10+ years of experience in Finance with BS/BA, or 8+ Years with MS/MA or MBA

  • A BS or BA is required, and a CPA or MBA is strongly preferred.

  • Experience in roles with increasing scope and responsibility, in a fast-paced environment, matrix organizations.  

  • FP&A experience involving coordination of financial planning processes and month end close is desirable. 

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint with familiarity of Oracle, Hyperion, ERP systems and Tableau preferred.

  • Strong problem solving, analytical and communication skills.

  • Experience in people management is a plus.

  • Experience in R&D Finance, biotech or pharmaceuticals industry a plus.
