Reporting to the Executive Director of Alumni and Corporate Relations, the Associate Director, Young Alumni and Student Relations serves as the Alumni Relations team's primary liaison to the School's MBA, EMBA, MS, Ph.D., and Executive Education young alumni and student populations. The candidate will be responsible for young alumni and student engagement initiatives and will work collaboratively with the Corporate Relations team to advise student clCompany reaching out to alumni. The Associate Director will additionally work closely with the Student Government Alumni Committee on student initiatives and will serve as a liaison to the Young Alumni Board. As a member of the Alumni Relations team, the candidate will also support general Alumni Relations and External Relations events and outreach.
Primary responsibilities include managing the successful execution of programs that help connect students with the alumni population; managing a young alumni board; recruiting volunteer mentors and speakers from the alumni base; advising student organizations who seek alumni speakers for events; facilitating the student-to alumni transition via targeted outreach to graduating students and a clear communications strategy for new graduates; developing and supporting engagement and programming initiatives for young alumni, and collaborating with the Individual Giving team on an engagement strategy to cultivate 1st-year Reunion committee volunteers.
The successful incumbent is a reliable and motivated team member, invested in raising the bar for Alumni Relations at Columbia Business School, and consistently demonstrates the core and partnership values of teamwork, integrity, accountability, and respect.
Advise student organizations on alumni outreach, communication, and speaker strategies. Provide support and recommendations to student clCompany seeking to organize alumni/student events and speaker series. Increase the visibility of External Relations as a resource for student clCompany interested in alumni engagement.
Successfully manage the Assistant Director of Young Alumni and Student Relations. Set roles and responsibilities in conjunction with unit goals to ensure the assistant director is a direct contributor to the team.
Serve as the primary Alumni Relations representative on the Conference Advising Team to provide administrative support and advising to 18-22 student organizations hosting professional conferences annually.
Serve as the primary Alumni Relations liaison to MBA Student AffInstitutes, EMBA Academic and Student AffInstitutes, and Executive Education, providing specific support during new student orientation, recognition and graduation, large-scale student interfacing events, and large-scale student/alumni interfacing events. Additionally, s/he will serve as the primary liaison for students and young alumni through their five-year reunion. He will develop a cyclical engagement and fundraising strategy for alumni 0-5 years post-graduation in partnership with the Individual Giving team.
Manage the David and Lyn Silfen Leadership Series by working closely with the student Silfen board, corporate relations, assisting in speaker/event organization, and stewardship of the Series benefactor.
Along with assistance from the Assistant Director, serve as a lead liaison to the Young Alumni Board. Provide guidance and support for successful broad-based engagement. Manage bi-annual board meetings and set up long-term board structure with co-presidents.
Develop and manage the Alumni Orientation program in partnership with the MBA, EMBA, and MS/Ph.D. program offices. Ensure clear communication to graduating students regarding alumni benefits and engagement opportunities. Manage alumni auditing program. Oversee the timely data transfer from Executive Education student databases to Alumni Relations databases in coordination with ITG. Coordinate the purchase of gifts and merchandise associated with the program.
Oversee the planning and implementation of Columbia Forever Week in collaboration with the Assistant Director and the student-led Alumni Committee. Develop cost-effective programming aimed toward strengthening graduating students' ties to the School. Identify opportunities to encourage a culture of giving amongst graduating students. In partnership with Individual Giving and the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations, support strategic efforts toward achieving an 80% participation goal by graduating students toward their class gift campaign.
Work with the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations to plan and execute annual young alumni and family-focused programming. Develop a segmented strategy for engaging recent alumni populations through interest- and/or identity-based programming. Develop and implement a communications strategy to encourage support of the annual fund in event-related messaging. Collaborate with key stakeholders, including the Young Alumni Board, Women's COrganizationle, and the Individual Giving team, where applicable.
In conjunction with the Assistant Director of Individual Giving, identify and cultivate potential members of the 1st-year Reunion committee, using students' second year at the School as a starting point in the identification process. Develop a strategy for continued engagement of young alumni between their 1st and 5th reunions in support of a goal of an average of 25% annual fund participation across alumni 0-5 years post-graduation. Manage young alumni programming during Reunion weekend.
Update MBA and EMBA student and young alumni materials and weCompanyages; coordinate graduation gifts for Executive Education certificate holders; draft customized MBA, EMBA, and Executive Education student and young alumni communications; utilize the CBS Connect student dashboard to highlight opportunities for students to network with alumni.
Manage the "Class Notes" program for inclusion in Columbia Business magazine.
Staff local alumni events, including Reunion Weekend, and perform related duties and special projects as needed.
Bachelor's degree and/or related 3-5 years relevant equivalent experience required. Previous management experience preferred.
Three to five years of related experience required, ideally in Alumni Relations, Student AffInstitutes, Student Development, or another event management field. Basic knowledge of HTML and previous database management/reporting experience a plus. Must have the ability to handle a multitude of tasks under deadline pressures and have the ability to work in a high-volume, high-demand (but highly collaborative, supportive, team-oriented) office. Must be creative, enterprising, persuasive, and tactful. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills required. Some evening and weekend hours required.
