Position Summary


Reporting to the Senior Executive Director of Development, the incumbent is expected to be a highly energetic professional with the ability to engage Columbia Law School’s international prospects and donors, as well as tri-state prospects. Manage a portfolio of approximately 150 individuals, with 60-75 percent focused on international prospects. Initiate and support all global development activities for the Law School targeted at major individual gifts from prospects (alumni, parents, friends and some international corporations and foundations). Travel regularly internationally to build the Law School’s donor base abroad. Job duties include direct cultivation, solicitation and closure of six and seven figure major and planned gifts. Working with Alumni Relations and Development, help implement programs and events in foreign locations where necessary to engage potential donors. Partnering with senior management and the Law School’s international Centers/Programs, strategize and fully develop options for international advisory boards or other venue, especially focused on Campaign Support.


Work closely with the Development, Alumni Relations, and Communications team to assure that fund-raising opportunities are maximized. Columbia Law School is in a $300M Campaign and the incumbent will be part of an experienced and talented development team challenged with meeting or exceeding the School’s goals.


Responsibilities


Identifies, cultivates and manages a defined portfolio or approximately 150 donors and potential donors with high giving capacity (with an international prospect pool of between 60-75 percent). International travel required – approximately 2-3 months/year. Regular communication with relevant faculty is critical


Devises strategies for the solicitation and closure of major and planned gifts from individuals in portfolio.


Conduct a minimum of 150 face-to-face meetings with prospects annually.


Creates annual operating plan, defining individuals to be cultivated, solicited and closed as well as dollars to be raised, and is responsible for meeting these targets.


Identifies potential volunteers for the Law School for any of the following areas planned giving; annual fund; reunions; Board of Visitors and Dean’s Council.


Develop strategic plan to engage international alumni prospects through international advisory boards or other venues for leadership engagement.


Works closely with the Dean, Associate Dean and Executive Director and prepares materials for prospect solicitation process.


Will be expected to contribute ideas and strategies for overall Development Program and other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor’s degree required. A minimum of 4-6 years related experience in a competitive challenging work environment preferred. Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills necessary. Must be creative, persuasive and tactful. Must have the ability to both lead and work in a team environment. An understanding and appreciation of the role of development in an educational institution is highly desirable, as is an understanding of a professional school’s mission and structure. The ability to work successfully with skilled professionals in the legal, academic and corporate communities is essential. This position requires evening and weekend work and travel as necessary.Must be able to work with diverse constituencies and support an inclusive work environment.
