The Blair YMCA (YMCA) Board of Directors is actively seeking a visionary leader who will build upon strong executive leadership and continue a culture of excellence within the YMCA. The CEO will be uniquely positioned to champion the YMCA mission and develop partnerships to meet the needs of the YMCA and the community. Building upon and expanding partnerships is a key focus for the future work of the YMCA.

Qualified candidates must have a solid business acumen, sound judgment, and exceptional leadership skills. They must have a proven track record that demonstrates an ability to successfully implement and promote the YMCA’s services and activities to the community; raise funds through annual and capital campaigns; assess community needs and develop programs in partnership with others to meet those needs; develop and manage a staff; and work with a YMCA board that focuses on strategic issues. The board desires a CEO who is creative, adaptive and open to new ideas. The new CEO is expected to partner with the board in building a lasting and impactful Y legacy in the community.

Salary Range: $65,000 – $75,000, commensurate with experience. There are opportunities for an increased salary based on current level of expertise and immediate contribution ability. This position is also eligible, based on the performance of the YMCA and the individual, for an annual merit opportunity.

Residency Expectation: Living in Washington County is preferred.

Benefits: YMCA participates in the Y Retirement Program at an 12% rate, with the YMCA contributing 7% and the employee 5%. Vacation plan, health insurance, and other benefits per personnel policy included.

The Blair YMCA Association Facts:

Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

History: The Blair Family Y was chartered 25 years ago, and its well-maintained facility is only 15 years old.

Service Area: The Blair YMCA serves the Washington County area.

The 45,000 sq. ft. facility is 15 years old and offers:

Pool - The YMCA has a multi-use indoor pool with zero-depth entry and six 25-yard lanes. The pool area also has a hot tub and sauna.

Fitness Room - Our fitness center is equipped with all new cardiovascular and strength training equipment. The facility also includes free weights, squat cage racks, Cybex, and Magnum universal machines. Cybex treadmills, ellipticals, and a wide variety of other cardio equipment are also available to members.

Aerobics Studio - YMCA aerobic classes are held in our aerobics studio and are led by certified instructors. All classes are free to members.

Gymnasium - The YMCA has a double gymnasium which is used for youth and adult sports and is also available for member use throughout the day.

Game Room - Our game room is equipped with foosball, pool, ping pong, and several video games.

Child Watch Center - The YMCA offers free babysitting services for members while they are working out.

Membership: The YMCA has a membership of approximately 1,237 members/3,357 units.

Programs: The YMCA offers Healthy Living Programs, Aquatics, Youth sports, and Adult sports.

Staff: The CEO directly supervises an Office Manager, Fitness/Aquatics Director, Childcare Director, and Sports Coordinator.

Volunteers: The YMCA is currently led by a local board of 20 Board of Directors.

Financial: The YMCA current budget is $1.1M and operates on with a current debt of $340,000.

Capital Campaign History: The YMCA has successfully addressed over $2MM of capital debt and is currently working with major donors to address the current debt, as well as securing additional funds for facility maintenance and upkeep.

Community: The City of Blair is located in eastern Nebraska on the Missouri River, approximately 20 miles north of the metropolitan Omaha area. As of the 2010 census, Blair had a total population of 7,990. In Nebraska, the City of Blair is designated a City of the First Class. Blair is the county seat of Washington County (2010 population of 20,234). The city covers a total area of 5.5 square miles.

Highways that run through Blair include Nebraska Highway 133 (Blair High Road), US Highway 30, US Highway 75 and Nebraska Highway 91. Interstate 29 is fifteen minutes east on Highway 30, and Interstate 680/80 is twenty-five minutes south on Highway 133. Population of 8,000.

Minimum Criteria for candidates:

Accredited 4-year college degree.

Excellent written, verbal and technology communication skills, as well as personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.

Ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.

Strategic planning and fundraising experience, including annual campaigns and capital projects.

Ability and knowledge to develop new programs, review and enhance programs being offered or considered.

Proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management.

Preferred Criteria for Candidates:

YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. If the candidate does not possess this, they must obtain it within 3 years from the date of hire.

Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.

Fiscally sound business management approach.

Proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management of approximately $500,000 or more annually.

Essential Functions

Key Deliverables:

Fiscal Management: Use a high level of financial analysis to forecast financial trends, growth and stability while consistently leading the organization to balance or surplus operations by growing earned revenue and contributions and controlling costs. Empower and guide staff leaders on the successful financial operation of their areas of responsibility. Monitor the budget closely to address competition that impacts membership, facility needs, and anticipate impact on revenue and expenses related to upkeep and maintenance of the facility.

Improve Operating Performance: Work with the board to develop an annual tactical plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives that will support the YMCA facility. Remain fully informed of all operational issues and have the keen ability to quickly address any issues that might arise as well as forecast future needs. Opportunities exist to enhance membership and program offerings.

Establish and Maintain a Positive Culture: Continue to strengthen a culture of inclusion, integrity, character and life-long learning within the YMCA organization that reinforces, encourages, and promotes values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Develop and Manage the Staff Team: The YMCA seeks a “servant leader” who can inspire a positive attitude and build a cohesive team. The new CEO will create a plan to build unity, encourage teamwork, set operational goals tied to a strategic plan, hold staff accountable, and foster individual staff development. Lead by example; remain actively engaged in staff development and performance leading to superior results in programs, member satisfaction and community engagement. Create an ongoing evaluation program for each department head and work directly with each to implement goals and measurable objectives for them and their departments.

Develop and Implement a Strategic Plan: Have the ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, the Alliance Partner and the Board of Directors, to create and develop a strategic roadmap that addresses opportunities and challenges related to the community’s support of facilities and programs, with defined organizational strategies. Lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. Lead volunteers in creating and aligning committees and their work plans to support the strategies and goals of the association.

Advocate the YMCA Vision Within the Community: Serve as ambassador for the mission, goals and values of the YMCA. Lead efforts with increasing membership and delivering high quality programs to the community. Actively interact and communicate with the communities in the region as a representative of the YMCA. Represent the YMCA’s mission to community leaders, donors, staff and volunteers. Assure existing strong partnerships are fostered, and new partnerships are created. Be seen and respected as a leader within the community, while proactively creating collaborations to enhance outreach and program initiatives. Quickly establish relationships with groups, key community organizations and leaders such as, our local school system, city, county, hospital, and other employers.
