We are seeking a Chief Advancement Officer to lead our development strategy and fundraising activities, building upon our organization’s successful foundation and working alongside our dedicated staff and Board of Directors to take The BASIC Fund to new levels of fundraising and long term financial sustainability. Historically, our current annual fundraising has ranged from $6.5mm to $8mm and we are seeking a new leader to both grow this amount to $10mm++ and assist in evaluating a potential capital campaign. Specifically, the position will be responsible for the following functions: fundraising, major and planned gifts, prospect research, communications strategy, foundation, corporate, alumni, and donor relations. This is a full-time position reporting to the BASIC Fund’s Chief Executive Officer. The position is located in Oakland and will encompass occasional travel to surrounding communities.



• Identify and implement new revenue streams, with a focus on increasing sustainable unrestricted, private revenue

• Provide leadership and expertise to establish short and long term goals to achieve immediate growth and long term sustainable fund raising levels

• Create and implement state of the art strategies for cultivation and stewardship of all existing and potential donors, annual fundraising events and appeals, annual giving, alumni giving, planned giving, major gifts, and foundation and corporate partnerships

• Develop annual fundraising projections based on historical performance, current capabilities, and future economic trends

• Create and maintain systems to assure gift entry and acknowledgement, and donor instructions are documented and followed

• Create, cultivate, and maintain select important relationships with high target donors, including identification, cultivation, solicitation, data tracking, and stewardship

• Lead the creation and growth of a new framework for individual giving with estate planning, sustainers, and bequests

• Partner with the CEO and Executive team to deepen existing funder relationships and cultivate new supporters

• Work collaboratively with the CEO and Board to develop and implement strategies to diversify funding and cultivate and monetize high-level relationships

• Independently identify and pursue new funding sources


• Serve as the lead strategist, designing and implementing The BASIC Fund development and communication strategy that includes print, digital, social media and public relations components in an effort to spread recognition of The BASIC Fund = and enhance our brand and reputation

• Develop a comprehensive and proactive marketing and branding strategy that articulates the value proposition of The BASIC Fund, supports the strategic goals, core values, and aspirations of the Board and ensures that all messages emanating from The BASIC Fund are accurate and consistent

• Oversee production of BASIC Fund Annual Update and other print materials

• Utilize a data-driven research-based approach to identify target audiences and key messages

Team and Community Leadership:

• Serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for The BASIC Fund and articulate our mission to external constituents

• Together with the CEO, educate and train board members in donor cultivation and professional fund raising techniques

• Lead and build the Development/Communications/Data team to achieve operational efficiency and effectiveness

• Work closely with the CEO and Board Leadership in creating short term and long-term fundraising and program goals

• With CEO, create the annual budget for the Development/Communication department

• Publicly represent The BASIC Fund at meetings, conferences, and with external constituency groups, including community, government, and private organizations, building excitement for expansion our organization’s funding/mission and overall awareness

• Implement a continuous improvement philosophy that includes benchmarking programs, peer-based performance metrics, and outcomes that support high performance standards

• Provide regular reports to the CEO and Board Leadership, showing progress against goals and timelines, including presentations at Board of Director meetings


• Bachelor’s degree required, MBA or related graduate degree preferred

• A passion for supporting families from low socioeconomic backgrounds

• A true belief in the power of quality education in helping families climb out of poverty

• Demonstrated successes leading strategic program/business growth through the creation and implementation of technology driven and engaging marketing and development programs

• Highly organized with exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with co-workers, prospects, donors and The BASIC Fund Board in a wide range of roles

• Minimum of seven years of directly related experience, preferably in a leadership capacity in development for a nonprofit, educational organization

• The ability to lead strategic advancement programs, such as donor acquisition, sponsorship, planned giving, major gifts, direct mail, and grant writing

• Proficient verbal and written communication influencing skills and the ability to be a persuasive, credible and polished communicator

• $10MM++ campaign experience preferred, capital campaign experience a plus

• Use of Salesforce a plus
