Based in Washington, D.C. and reporting to Executive Director Mike Daulton, The Chief Development & Communications Officer (CDCO) will oversee all fundraising and communications for Bat Conservation International. S/he will will partner closely with the Executive Director, the Board, Leadership Team, donors and other key constituents to advance BCI’s brand and mission. S/he will be responsible for securing significant financial resources from government agencies, individuals, foundations, and corporations that are are necessary to support BCI’s global conservation agenda, and will oversee the development of content and collateral.

The The successful candidate will be an successful candidate will be an entrepreneurial, results-driven, senior advancement professional with success in leading development and communications teams to success, and closing six - figure+ grants from government agencies.

Essential Functions

• Manage and establish goals for the development and communications

teams and conduct annual performance reviews for direct reports.

• Oversee all fundraising functions, which include institutional and

individual giving, planned giving, donor prospecting and research, and

special annual or multi year fundraising initiatives.

• Grow support from institutional funders; work with program staff in the

development and strategy of government and foundation proposals.

• Envision, plan and execute strategies to grow BCI’s membership base,

ensure donor retention, and increase overall dollars per donor.

• Work with communications and program staff to organize national and

international marketing and communications outreach as well as events

to support development goals.

• Coordinate strategy for major gifts fundraising, guide and support the BCI

Executive Director in his fundraising work with major donors, and directly

cultivate a core group of high value prospects and donors.

• Develop an external affairs plan for the organization and ensure

organization wide commitment to partnerships.

• Manage and ensure compliance with all BCI gift related policies and

procedures, as defined by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

• Serve as staff liaison to the BCI Development & Communications


Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree preferably in nonprofit management, business,

public relations, marketing or related field, as well as a minimum of

seven years of senior level development experience with increasing

responsibility and results.

• Demonstrated track record of securing $5M or more annually in

operating or campaign funds through a variety of sources, including

governmental agencies, major donors, foundations, corporations,

membership drives, and endowments.

• Experience working with institutional funders, specifically U.S.

Government agencies like the Department of the Interior, the

Department of Energy, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,

among others.

• Extensive management experience, including the ability to

motivate, lead, set objectives and manage the performance of a

large, multi disciplinary team. Ability to foster an environment of

creativity and professional growth

• Effective understanding of charitable gift planning and experience

building and refining a planned giving program

• Ability to design, implement and direct multiple projects, setting

deadlines and ensuring accountability

• Experience working in a distributed organization, both leading a

team and collaborating with other departments remotely.

• CFRE certification or commitment to pursue a plus

• Proficiency with MS Office, as well as strong expertise in donor

database management systems essential; experience with Raisers
