As a key member of the Executive Team, the CFO will report directly to the President and play a critical role in the overall strategic management of the College-Institute. The Chief Financial Officer will lead both the strategy and day-to-day operations of the accounting and finance functions, human resources, financial aid, and technology functions for the organization and across its four campuses. As a member of the executive leadership team, the CFO will serve as a proactive strategic advisor to the President and his senior team, in addition to partnering with the Audit, Investment and Finance Committees of the Board of Governors.  


This is an ideal opportunity for a proven financial leader accustomed to managing a complex portfolio and leading change to apply their expertise towards HUC-JIR’s mission of serving as an educational and intellectual center for reform Judaism. 


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Organizational Leadership and Strategy


Serve as a key business partner in developing and implementing the College-Institute’s strategic plan

Advise the President and executive team on the College-Institute’s financial performance and long-term financial planning

Report financial information and trends to the Board and manage relationships with the Board’s Audit, Investment, and Finance committees

Advise the executive team on key strategic issues and decisions, informed by rigorous financial analyses, risk assessments, “what if” scenario modeling and due diligence

Manage and develop a team of 7 direct reports, including leads of accounting, finance, IT, HR, and financial aid, ensuring each team is coached, developed, and positioned to achieve their goals

Advise the President and executive team on issues related to HUC’s real estate portfolio - including property usage, ongoing and deferred maintenance, and the possibility of reimagining the college’s buildings and properties due to new program needs and/or revenue potential

Foster a culture that encourages kindness, accountability, and transparency


Financial Management and Oversight


Ensure timely and accurate financial statements, adhering to appropriate regulatory and financial controls 

Provide reporting, analysis and communications of financial outcomes to the Board, internal, and external constituents 

Oversee the annual audit process; liaise with external auditors and the Audit Committee of the Board of Governors

Oversee the College-Institute’s treasury management activities, including debt, investment, and daily cash management

Devise, implement, and administer the organization’s overall budgeting and forecasting process, ensuring clear communications to the Board, internal, and external constituents

Oversee all financial results and analysis, managing overall revenue and expenses in support of the College-Institute’s strategic direction

Manage the College-Institute’s $250M+ endowment, with an eye towards risk management and income maximization


Technology, HR, and Financial Aid


In coordination with the Chief Technology Officer, assess the current state of technology for the institution , maximizing investment to meet the strategic and tactical needs of the College-Institute 

Oversee Human Resources and Title IX functions ensuring successful delivery of compliance, policies, personnel administration, payroll, and benefits 

Ensure timely and accurate financial aid compliance across the College-Institute

Oversee legal function including employment, contracts, and other legal matters


CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:


The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:


A minimum of 15+ years of overall professional experience, with a minimum of five years’ experience in financial management, including oversight of human resources, and/or information technology

Strong analytical capabilities including financial planning, forecasting, modeling, and data analysis

Track record of building and leading effective teams; evidence of building a customer-centric, data-driven team culture and coaching/developing others to maximize their potential 

Collaborative approach to executive leadership, and the ability to work effectively with cross functional teams to meet goals and improve organizational performance

Strong communication, influencing and listening skills with the demonstrated ability to articulate reasoning and thought process to diverse audiences

Compelling leadership presence, with a track record of working effectively with the Board and other members of senior management and serving as a thought partner to business unit leaders

Demonstrated capability to partner with operational leadership to set and achieve financial, strategic and operational goals

Strong track record at designing and enhancing financial and business office systems and processes

Expertise managing external resources including auditors, benefit providers and other professionals

Exceptional time management and project management skills; able to prioritize mix of cyclical and ongoing projects seamlessly

Must be comfortable with and have an appreciation for Jewish culture

Able to spend 25-30% of time traveling to each campus

Management of a multi-divisional international organization, higher education institution, and/or non-profit experience preferred
