CHNY is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the company's vital finance function. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with senior leadership, the CFO will take a lead role in driving financial strategy after recent, rapid growth. In partnership with the executive team, the Board, and leaders of the parent organization, Covenant House International, the CFO will capitalize on opportunities and proactively address challenges to ensure CHNY is able to advance its work through organizational business planning, the development of agency-wide financial and administrative objectives and policies, as well as the implementation of best business practices.


As the leader of the finance function, the CFO will manage a team of six and an overall organizational budget of $28M, while overseeing forecasting, financial reporting, accounting, purchasing, and grants. The CFO will advise and partner with teams across the organization to further develop internal controls to mitigate risk and safeguard assets of the agency by providing financial expertise, establishing strong systems, refining processes, and developing strong financial literacy to ensure accountability and ownership organization-wide. The CFO will ensure the highest standards of financial management and guide how the company manages incoming philanthropic dollars and government grants, expenses and overall cash flow in an inherently dynamic and fluid environment that includes a robust and diverse array of programming for its constituents.

Organizational Leadership & Strategy


Partner with the executive team to develop and manage a financial plan, including the financial oversight of a current capital campaign designed to increase accessibility and programming

Advise the ED and executive team on the organization's financial performance and long-term financial planning; report financial information and trends to a range of audiences as well as manage relationships with the boards and senior leadership of both CHNY and Covenant House International

Partner with the ED and executive team on key strategic issues and decisions, informed by rigorous financial analyses, risk assessments, "what if" scenario modeling, and due diligence

Shape an organization-wide culture of financial accountability, empowering team members to take ownership of their team's budgeting and financial needs

Foster a culture that encourages both growth and innovation and supports diversity, equity and inclusion throughout the organization and the work



Financial Management


Manage all finance and accounting functions, including day-to-day financial reporting, working capital/cash management, FP&A, financial controls and risk management

Improve current systems and software for financial reporting and tracking to enable a more efficient and transparent workflow

Develop and manage dynamic financial and business planning models, along with performance metrics, that drive the development of monthly and quarterly reports and the annual budgeting process

Ensure effective and compliant business operations, where risk is evaluated and mitigated on an ongoing basis; ensure adequate insurance coverage for the corporation

Recognize and anticipate opportunities and challenges related to financial systems and processes

Establish strong external relationships and negotiate with creditors, service providers, and other financial entities

Ensure all financial audits and related filings are completed on-time and in good standing



Team Management


Lead a team of six across the the Finance and Accounting departments

Communicate a compelling vision and strategy for the finance function as well as the team, and collaborate with each team member to set individual goals to drive successful execution of that strategy

Identify and amplify talent across the team, managing and mentoring individuals to achieve ambitious results, while fostering a high standard of excellence and accountability

Support team members' learning, development, and career growth

Build a team culture of optimism, excellence, transparency, and adaptability in a rapidly changing environment



CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:


10+ years of financial leadership experience; 15+ years of total experience

At least five years of experience leading the finance function for a growing nonprofit organization; familiarity with managing grants reporting -- particularly government grants and restricted funds required

Exceptional strategic and analytical skills, including financial planning, forecasting, modeling and data analysis

Experience working with and implementing a suite of financial reporting and donor-tracking software; familiarity with the Sage + Intacct platform is a huge plus

Track record of providing enterprise-wide financial planning and analysis to support decision-making, budget development and budget management

Demonstrated ability to build relationships with and engage diverse, high-level board members and senior team leaders

Track record of success in leading and mentoring high-performing teams

Ability to lead during periods of change, with a sense of calm, optimism, and pragmatism

Capacity to thrive in a fast paced, complex organization, working with teams that have competing priorities and unpredictable schedules and agendas

Strong communication skills; confidently and clearly conveys information and the rationale for decisions

Curiosity and desire to acquire new knowledge when faced with problems, with an ability to quickly change a plan and delegate tasks in response to to new learnings

Teaching orientation when working with others; able to translate complex information and empower others to utilize financial information when making decisions
