The VA Hudson Valley Healthcare System is currently looking to fill a full time, Chief of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (physician) position. This position is located at the Wappinger Falls VA Medical Center, Castle Point NY, but will occasionally be required to travel to the Montrose facility.
The Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is responsible for the day to day operations at both the Castle Point and Montrose locations with primary duties at the Castle Point facility. Duties to include but not limited to:
- Have a broad medical expertise that allows them to treat disabling conditions throughout a person's lifetime
- Diagnose and treat pain as a result of an injury, illness, or disabling condition
- Determine and lead a treatment/prevention plan
- Lead a team of medical professionals, which may include physical therapists, occupational therapists, and physician extenders to optimize patient care
- Work with other physicians, which may include primary care physicians, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons and other specialties as necessary
- Focus treatment on function
- EMG/Nerve Conduction studies
- Ultrasound guided procedures
- Spasticity Treatment (Phenol and Botulinum toxin injections, intrathecal baclofen pump trial and implants)
- Prosthetics and Orthotics
- Complementary-alternative medicine
- Disability/impairment assessment
- Medicolegal consulting
- Monitor and verify time and attendance for direct reports. Ensure employees are aware, know and understand their tour of duty
- Ensure dictated or written notes are completed on patients within guidelines and regulations
- Encourage and challenge team members to embark on process improvement efforts regularly
- Review and approve overtime/compensatory time as necessary ensuring budgetary constraints are considered in the decision making
- Review and process requests in VA time and attendance system regularly
- Communicate with HAS on cancellation notices due to provider absence and address as necessary
- Review/approve cancellations of appointments and ensure appointments are re-scheduled
- Mentor staff and take action as necessary to ensure staff members are meeting their performance expectations and contributing to the VA's goals.
- Encourage participation in the clinical pertinence reviews among direct reports
- Encourage career development such as provider participation in the tort claim review process.
- Encourage providers on the peer review process and encourage participation in the process to ensure quality assurance and total quality management.
- Ensure Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations are completed by the business office on a bi-annual basis
- Track and complete performance appraisals and annual proficiencies on direct reports
- Work with the clinical staff to set parameters of the visits and develop a scheduling grid in collaboration with the business manager
- Track and verify your direct reports are completing required training
- Track and ensure providers continued medical education (CME) and/or educational requirements are kept up to date.
- Ensure all patient issues are resolved promptly in PATS-R and to the White House Hotline
- Review and identify equipment needs of the clinic and coordinate with business manager to procure as necessary.
- Review and use practice management tools and utilize data in practice development decisions
- Verify and ensure employees are mapped accurately and meet with the MCA Program Analyst as required.
- Other duties assigned by the ACOS as necessary.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am - 4:30pm, subject to change based on the needs of the agency.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Must be Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for this position
Preferred Experience: Sub-specialty Certification in Brain Injury, Pain Medicine or Spinal Cord injury medicine.
Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44lbs), moderate carrying (15-44lbs), straight pulling (.5hr), pushing (.5hr), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (2.5hrs), standing (5hrs), repeated bending, ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid permitted).
