The Chief of Staff will report to the President/CEO and the Executive Director of the organization. The Chief of Staff is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the President/CEO’s office. The Chief of Staff will also be responsible for managing incoming requests, including from the board, staff, executives, donors, and government officials on behalf of the President/CEO and Executive Director. The position will work closely with the Leadership Team. In this role, you will support a culture that inspires inclusion, loyalty, excellence, cutting edge innovation, and creativity. The position is based in New York and placed in the Operations.


Strategic calendar management including planning and coordinating across all internal and external requests for the President/CEO’s time. Responsible for working with members of the Executive Office to plan, organize, and implement daily and long-range schedules to ensure the President/CEO’s actions are aligned with NRDC’s mission and goals.

Ensures visits and engagements are successful by facilitating preparation with colleagues engaged with trustees, donors, government officials and federal agencies, and local, state, and media entities, as appropriate.

Function as traveling aide; oversee all logistics surrounding events and meetings; orchestrates changes to plans (on the ground, in real time) as needed.

Comfortable operating at a fast pace to prioritize conflicting needs; handles matters expeditiously, proactively, and follows-through on projects to successful completion, often with deadline pressures.

Facilitates cross-team coordination of projects and assignments, working in partnership across the organization.

Oversees and provides guidance and advice on scheduling and developing meeting prep materials for the Chairman/CEO. Responsible for the execution and management of the President/CEO’s briefing book process; requests information and documents from staff in advance of meetings with the President/CEO.

Drafts letters, meeting minutes, correspondence, emails, briefing materials, and other tasks that facilitate President/CEO’s ability to effectively lead the organization

Manages historical archive (records) of all engagements and events.

Maintains discretion and confidentiality in relationships with all board members and others


Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Minimum of 5-7 years of administrative experience supporting in the executive-level work environment, including the ability to achieve maximum efficiency, accuracy, and professional demeanor in a fast-paced environment. Prior role as Chief of Staff is strongly preferred.

Computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite); Excel and PowerPoint presentations.

Skilled in management and leadership with the ability to direct programs, staff, and cross-functional teams in an efficient and effective manner. Exceptional interpersonal skills including tact, patience, and acumen and the ability to work with many diverse individuals and groups across various functions.

Excellent organizational and analytical skills and the ability to formulate recommendations and improve team dynamics.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, including creative writing, presentation development, and presentation skills.

Ability to work effectively under pressure, handle multiple priorities, tasks, demands, and time-sensitive situations.

Experience working in a fast-paced environment; and commitment to completing tasks on time and to the highest ethical and professional standards.
