Reporting to the Board of Directors, GMGI is seeking a senior level Chief Operating Officer (COO) with extensive operating experience either in the non-profit or life sciences for-profit sector. The COO will be responsible for the high-level operations of the research and educational facilities, including responsibility for GMGI’s financial health, educational programs, and execution of its mission. The COO is responsible for providing operational support for the Science Director, who has overall responsibility for GMGI research efforts.


The COO has responsibility for carrying out the organization’s strategic and operational plan, as determined by the GMGI Board. The COO must have a deep knowledge of GMGI’s strategy, programs, operations, and budget, and be thoroughly committed to GMGI’s mission.


Leadership and Management


·Ensure ongoing programmatic excellence, rigorous program goals and evaluation, consistent quality in finance and administration, overall budget responsibility, fundraising and organizational sustainability, communications and systems


·Recommend timelines and resources needed to achieve strategic goals


·Manage the Development Director, Education Director and Director of Finance and Administration


·Actively engage and energize GMGI volunteers, board members, committees, partnering organizations, and funders


·Working closely with the Science Director, support a culture for a world class science institute


Risk Management


·Stay vigilant about all issues relating to risk management (i.e., communications, outreach, contracts, intellectual property, insurance etc.)


·Steward GMGI’s reputational capital


·Manage the organization’s relationship with outside attorneys, serving as liaison for legal issues


Human Resources


·Ensure staff, manage and develop a cohesive high-performance team


Technology


·Keep GMGI technology platforms up to date, ensuring adequate cyber security


·Develop organizational systems to track and provide timely and useful information for data driven program evaluation, fundraising information, and required research grant tracking and reporting


 Facilities


·Ongoing responsibility for meeting the organization’s space needs, including growth planning and lease negotiations


Academy and Other Education Programs


·Overall responsibility for Academy operations


·Manage the Education Director to ensure excellence in program design/content, recruitment, internships, job placement, evaluation and licensing


·Manage the Education Director in developing a strategic plan for an expanded educational program consistent with GMGI’s mission, including off-season educational uses for Academy space


Science / Science Hub


·Provide operational support to the Science Director to pursue scientific mission and research program objectives


·Attend regular Scientific Advisory Board meetings to understand how recommendations could potentially impact the organization


·Oversee logistics for Science Forums and other science community events


·Support the Science Director’s effort to build science outreach and collaborations


Finance


·Manage the Director of Finance and Administration in developing the annual budget and ongoing financial reporting. Ensure GMGI has adequate financial systems, procedures and controls in place for accurate and timely reporting and fiscal management


·Work with the Board Chair to develop long-term financial, capex and cash flow planning


·Manage the Director of Finance and Administration in developing a system for tracking, managing and reporting research grant spending


Organizational Sustainability/Development


·Manage the Development Director in the creation and execution of a long-term development strategy, including successfully completing the current $15M long-term growth fund and raising GMGI’s ongoing Academy annual fund


·Develop deep connections/relationships with North Shore and Boston area biotech firms for sponsorships, as well as research, development and Academy internships


·Work with GMGI’s Commercialization Committee on business development opportunities


Board/Communications


·Work with the Board to develop GMGI’s strategic plan and operational goals


·Work with the Board Chair to develop the board meeting agenda and materials


·Drive our communications plan execution (newsletter, press releases, web site, etc.)


·Support the build out of a strong Board of Directors, serve as ex-officio member of Board Committees


·Continue to build community relationships to ensure GMGI’s support and good standing in the community. Along with the Science Director, serve as GMGI’s primary spokespersons to the organization’s constituents, the media and the general public.


Professional Qualifications:


·Bachelors degree, advanced degree preferred


·Senior management experience, with non-profit or life sciences for-profit organization


·Demonstrated track record of building out an organization’s infrastructure/processes/systems


·Strong experience in staff management, development, and community relations


·Excellent communication and interpersonal skills


·Strong written and oral communication skills


·Strong strategic, analytical and problem-solving abilities, and the ability to think creatively


·Solid, hands-on budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting


·Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to non-profit sector, or investor relations
