The Chief Operating Officer is charged with overseeing and optimizing the non-instructional systems and structures of our organization as a means to improve teaching & learning and outcomes for our students. As a senior most member of the organization, the Chief Operating Officer will be looked to as a model of professionalism and integrity, and as someone who will drive the organization toward achieving significant results. In this role, we are seeking someone who can learn about what has made our program successful thus far, and work thoughtfully to develop a best-in-class approach to scaling our systems as we prepare to continue our expansion.

As part of the Prospect Schools’ Senior Leadership Team, the COO will report directly to and collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer, and will work closely with the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Chief Academic Officer, and Chief Financial Officer. This person will have face-to-face interaction with the Prospect Schools’ and Brooklyn Prospect Charter School’s boards, school leaders, and many faculty and staff across the network. The Chief Operating Officer directly manages our network operations, school support, IT, afterschool, and HR & talent functions at the central office, and sets the vision for operational excellence at our school sites.

Job Responsibilities:

People Management 

Directly manage the Director of Network Operations, Director of HR & Talent, and Director of IT Operations, while providing continuous support, coaching, and feedback with a strong orientation toward achieving results within and across their functional teams

Build strong relationships and effective communications with school leaders and operational staff to promote effective support of teaching and learning on campuses and to ensure alignment with strategic and tactical pathways to operational excellence

Manage and guide the Director of Network Operations’ facilitation of collaboration among the schools’ Directors of School Operations to enable them to share best practices and effective systems regarding operational accountability, student data, and managerial practices

Incorporate a strong customer service orientation into all aspects of network and school operations

Operations Leadership

Drive excellence and efficiency across all operational functions including school operations (food service, transportation, enrollment, & information systems), facilities, afterschool programming and compliance, and school openings.

Lead the design and implementation of systems, processes, and services that support Prospect Schools’ delivery of best-in-class educational outcomes

Develop and implement a vision for school quality that includes standardizing systems and processes of non-instructional teams at the school-level in service of excellent results for students

Establish training and development goals for non-instructional, school-based leaders and teams to ensure staff are equipped with the skills and competencies to execute their work effectively and independently

In partnership with Prospect Schools’ Senior Leadership Team, execute the network's expansion strategy, to ensure the seamless launch of new school sites (in coordination with the Capital Projects team) while providing robust support to existing sites

Ensure compliance with all non-financial reporting requirements for our authorizer, the city and state, and other regulatory agencies, in a timely and accurate manner, including overseeing all aspects of charter renewal process and authorizer visits

Utilize increased capacity and scale to develop efficient and affordable systems for school and network use, particularly regarding student information and data management

Make operational recommendations for organizational structure to foster a healthy, unified culture among central office staff and school sites, ensuring all team members feel valued, supported, and committed to our mission

About You:

Bachelor’s degree required with Master’s degree (MBA or Master of Public Policy/Public Administration) strongly preferred

Seven or more years of operational leadership experience in CMO, district, or education nonprofit setting, ideally with success overseeing many of the following functional areas: school and network operations, afterschool programming, IT, and human resources

Deeply strategic thinker with a record of setting and achieving ambitious goals

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to assess, motivate, and drive performance through individuals’ and teams’ strengths

Highly collaborative with the ability to balance goals with diplomacy and relationship-maintenance

Experienced systems-thinker who can mediate our need to scale our operations effectively while also preserving the agency we believe is necessary for schools and teams to thrive.
