In this moment, we need transformational leaders who understand the power of mobilizing people to affect change. Greenpeace U.S. seeks a dynamic and fearless leader to join its Senior Management Team as the Chief Program Officer. This highly visible person will report directly to the Executive Director and currently has six direct reports. This is a full-time role based in either Washington, D.C., or Oakland, CA.

The Chief Program Officer will oversee the long-term strategy for Greenpeace's strategic campaign areas, including Climate,Democracy,Oceans, andForests.Our program is aligned on domestic priority goals and critical global projects. For the next three years, our domestic priority goal is to stop the expansion of the oil and gas industry in the United States and usher in its responsible and equitable phaseout with a federal plan of action in the next five years. Globally we are committed to projects where we can make a critical difference, such as winning a global oceans treaty, ending single-use plastics, stopping deep-sea mining, protecting Indonesia's forests and ecosystems, and protecting labor rights, and ending illegal, unreported, and unregulated commercial tuna fishing. The Climate Team is campaigning to end fossil fuels and win a just transition and Green New Deal that puts frontline communities and workers first. This year the Climate Team is focused on ending public fossil fuel subsidies at the federal level and accelerating the fossil fuel phase out in California.The Democracy Team runs campaigns with allies to build a more inclusive democracy, defend and expand the right to peaceful protest, and stop the use of SLAPP suits to stifle dissent.

The Chief Program Officer must be a strategic and innovative thinker, oriented toward impact and understand the roles science, politics, society, economics, the media, and culture play in making long-lasting change.This individual will bring a deep understanding and commitment to social and environmental justice, intersectional analysis and perspective, people power, and a developed analysis of corporate power and structural oppression. They will guide the Program Team to deliver high-quality campaigns, peaceful, non-violent actions, and deep, meaningful research that ultimately exposes global environmental problems and promotes essential solutions to a green and peaceful future. Additionally, they will work across super-departments (Program, Development, and Administration) to integrate and ensure operational excellence across the organization.

Candidate Profile : 

Visionary and Transformational Leader:provides transformationalleadership for the strategic management of Greenpeace U.S.'s program and campaigns; establishes the direction and objectives for the Greenpeace U.S. program and contributes to achieving the strategic objectives of the global Greenpeace; Strong understanding of how justice and equity issues impact program planning and execution; demonstrated experience with progressive political movements andissues of environmental and social change both nationally and internationally

Proven Communication and Presentation skills:excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to present complex issues with clarity to a wide variety of audiences; ability to advise the Executive Director, Board Chairs and the Boards of Directors;and to externally promote Greenpeace, including interacting with the media, allies and other external stakeholders.

Proven Leadership within Large, Complex Organizations: Provide direction for the Greenpeace U.S. strategic plan; Partner with the Senior Management Team to co-create and implement strategic direction across the organization. Works closely with senior organizational leaders to lead planning for large campaigns, fundraising, and strategic organizational initiatives.

Proven and Effective People Manager:Provides oversight and management of the Program Operations Director, Campaigns Director, Actions Director,Programmatic CommunicationsDirector, and Engagement Director.Provide professional development support and mentorship to implement their individual and collective priorities.

Proven Fundraising Experience: Works with the Chief Development Officer to create internal systems to facilitate cross-departmental partnerships on fundraising. Proven ability to build relationships with funders and implement fundraising plans. Commitment to developing and maintaining a culture of philanthropy within Greenpeace. Ability to design campaigns and impact reports.Maintain existing relationships with environmental funders preferred.

Analytical and problem-solving skills:identify and anticipate broad and strategic environmental and media issues that impact Greenpeace's mandate; provide leadership to Greenpeace staff in the development of strategy and responses related to issues as mentioned earlier.

The Chief Program Officer:

Partners collaboratively with the Executive Director and the Senior Management Team to ensure a strategic clear, and coherent organizational plan and collectively manage its implementation.

Provides world-class leadership to the Programs department, motivating, coaching, and developing the future leaders committed to people-powered movement-building, engagement, and justice

Oversee and continually develop the direction, prioritization, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of Greenpeace U.S. campaigns, ensuring a healthy and effective balance between ambitious long-term campaigns and nimble rapid response campaigning.

ManageProgram Deputies ( Engagement, Actions, Communications, Campaigns, and Operations)on strategic and operational plans to ensure alignment and cohesion with organizational plans and objectives.

Act as a lead partner and communicator on behalf of Greenpeace to external audiences in the U.S. and internationally, including media, political, business, ally, and donor communities, to raise the profile and influence of Greenpeace and its campaigns and build respectful, inclusive relationships with key allies, partners and stakeholders

Build a dynamic, proactive team through recruitmentand management in partnership with the Chief Operating Officer and the Chief People & Culture Officer

Embrace, embody and promote a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and a passion for justice in our internal operations and external work.

Support the planning and implementation of Greenpeace's global program and actively influence global campaign strategy, ensure programmatic capacity as required by Greenpeace's international operating model

Participate in the international community of Greenpeace Program Leaders to identify and form jointly owned global campaigns with other national offices.

Oversee the annual budget setting process for the Program department in consultation with the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Development Officer. With direct reports and team leaders, allocate and monitor budgets for projects and campaign activities.

Work closely with theDevelopment Department to ensure implementation and evaluate GP USA's integrated public communications and fundraising strategies.

Cultivate a culture of philanthropy within the Program Department so that staff understands their role in building relationships with potential supporters and donors. 

 Minimum Requirementsinclude:

Proven track record in public/supporter engagement, mobilization, and organizing, including familiarity withtools and systemsto bring supporters into the work of the organization

Leadership experience and strategic guidance in a management or director level position focused on campaigning, organizing, advocacy, policy, and research

 A proven track record leading high-performing teams that are diverse across race and gender

 Prior experience managing complex budgets, high profile projects, and campaigns

Intrinsic and unwavering leadership and support for equity, diversity, and justice in the workplace and beyond

In-depth knowledge of U.S. politics and culture, social movements, and socio-economic environment

Developing and managingcampaign budgets and high priority projects and campaigns

Strong strategic campaigning experience usingvaried approaches,including a solid commitment to non-violent direct action as a means of affecting change

Proven track record in public/supporter engagement, mobilization, and organizing, including familiarity withtools and systemsto bring supporters into the work of the organization

High level of communications and media competency and experience engaging with and serving as a spokesperson to the media

Knowledge of global climate and environmental politics
