The Chief Underwriting Officer will be a founding member of a new Operating Unit focused on Private Company Management Liability and is responsible for the strategic planning and overall management of the underwriting discipline to ensure profitable growth.In close partnership with the PCML President, the CUO will drive underwriting execution, portfolio management and operational excellences in providing superior agent and insured experiences.The position will be based in Connecticut and required travel will be approximately 25% to 40%. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Managing line of business strategies and profitability

Formulate product position, underwriting rules, manuals and best practices

Develop a market competitive product aligned with Operating Unit Goals

Partner with Regional Vice Presidents and underwriters on local strategies, go to market campaigns and key agency relationships

Monitor emerging issues and trends impacting profitability and appetite

Develop training modules on underwriting guidelines, strategies or emerging issues

Establish partnership across Operating Units and serve as liaison on UW issues

Establish strong product governance including Corporate Charters, Audit structure, Authority, Referrals and Collaboration Guidelines

Design and lead Portfolio Reviews in collaboration with Actuary, Claims and Finance

Partner with OU president, segment leader and Ceded reinsurance team to develop a reinsurance buying strategy and to represent the Operating Unit via meetings with the reinsurance marketplace as appropriate

Communicate key information to Operating Unit staff in a timely and efficient manner

Collaborate with the Operating unit Operations leadership and field underwriting leadership to adjust practices and protocols for operational efficiency

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree required

Minimum of 15 years of Underwriting Experience

5+ years of Product Management Experience within the Management Liability suite of products (D&O, Cyber, EPL, Crime, Fiduciary)

Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic plans; that are driven by empirical analysis and include stated goals and delivery dates

Strong Project Management skills

Execution oriented with attention to details driven by natural curiosity and competitive spirit

Must have strong written and verbal communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills

Past experience working collaboratively with Operations, IT, Actuary and Field to improve operational efficiency
