This position is for the experienced data architect in a 60% data engineering/ architect leadership role and 40% hands on java development role, executing the design alongside the engineers on the team. All work is focused on development of a large data lake accessible from the AWS cloud at multiple levels of security.
We need a senior level data architect/engineer that thrives working on high-visibility or mission critical aspects of a given program and performs all functional duties independently. May oversee the efforts of less senior staff and/or be responsible for the efforts of all staff assigned to a specific job.
Understands data structures and can make recommendations to optimize application-specific data stores
Designs and builds relational and non-relational databases
Translates business needs into long-term architecture solutions.
Reviews object and data models and the metadata repository to structure the data for better management and quicker access.
Responsible for utilizing big data technologies (e.g., Apache Hive, Apache, Pig, Apache Spark, MapReduce, Hadoop, and MongoDB) and knowledge of data science models to analyze large amounts of data and create valuable insights for supporting the mission. Duties include finding and designing new approaches to handling, analyzing and using large volumes of law enforcement, intelligence, investigative, and business data sets; exploring fundamental issues with data handling, search, and retention; solving complex data and storage issues; designing new software coding to improve data search processes; designing, testing and validating the quality of the data and data processes; and analyzing and reporting results with actionable recommendations.
Typical Education & Experience
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 10 years work experience or equivalent experience
Required Skills and Education
Must have strong verbal and written communications skills. Must be able to communicate technical concepts to non technical government program staff. Must be strong leader whose success comes from using the input and skills of all team members to chart a path to success.
15 years of experience with programming and database scripting for large and complex information systems,
Minimum 6 years of experience with a technology such as Apache Hive or Apache Pig and processing platform such as Apache Spark or MapReduce and experience working in the Hadoop ecosystem and experience working with a nosql database such as MongoDB or Accumulo,
Strong java development experience and skills and desire to continue programming solutions alongside the team being led.
Preferred Skills and Education
AWS Solutions Architect Associate certification strongly desired. AWS Solutions Architect Professional certification a significant plus.
Bachelors or Masters degree in computer science, or related field
Agile development methodology training and certification as scrum master a plus.
Experience with developing database solutions using DynamoDB, or S3.
