Proskauer is seeking a Corporate Department Legal Director to join the Professional Resources team in New York. The Legal Director will work collaboratively to further the department’s growth and the development of its highly accomplished and dedicated attorneys. Specifically, the Legal Director will work directly with the Corporate Department Chairs and the Corporate Operational Partner on corporate-level administrative responsibilities and the management of a highly talented Corporate Practice Management team regarding the day-to-day administration of Corporate practice groups across the Firm’s U.S. offices.  

The responsibilities of the Legal Director include, but are not limited to:

Department Day-to-Day Management: 

  • Work closely with department leadership on all aspects of managing department, including weekly status meetings

  • Stay apprised of developments in other practice groups, departments and across the Firm 

  • Lead regular meetings with the Corporate practice management team to disseminate department and Firm objectives and updates and share best practices

  • Liaise with Professional Development, Financial Planning & Analytics, HR and Business Development on departmental matters

  • Handle day-to-day employee relations and morale issues for department

  • Organize and administer partner and departmental meetings by developingappropriate agendas

  • Work closely with national and international offices and other departments within the Firm

  • Organize meetings with Corporate practice group heads to discuss financials, productivity and group issues

  • Plan all department events and team-building activities

  • Manage the department’s budget, including approval of expenses

  • Monitor, analyze and report on attorney and paralegal productivity and performance

  • Manage other projects as needed, including arranging secondments

Legal Training and Skills Development: 

  • Coach attorneys on career advancement and skills development strategies

  • Design, develop and implement core curriculum program, in-house CLE training programs for corporate attorneys, and facilitate training initiatives

  • Consult broadly and often among attorneys about their educational and skills development needs

  • Develop orientation program and building-blocks skills training for new and lateral associates, including departmental portions of week-long "Proskauer Institute"

Department Evaluation and Promotions Process:

  • Manage evaluation process for attorneys and take part in formulation and delivery of reviews, including senior attorney reviews

  • Work with partners who are charged with ensuring that senior associates are getting appropriate exposure, assignments and experience as they approach the time they become eligible for promotion

  • Participate in determination of recommendations for promotion to senior counsel and partner, and manage the promotions process for the department, including preparation of promotion presentations and nominating memos

  • Assist with salary and bonus recommendations for non-partner attorneys, and participate in decision-making regarding the same

Recruiting/Human Resources: 

  • Direct Corporate practice management team regarding hiring of lateral associates and contract employees

  • Serve on Firm Summer Associate and Hiring Committees and determine new department hires from summer program

  • Act as an advisor in addressing personnel issues and conflicts

  • Identify and engage coaches to further attorney professional development

  • Participate in employee terminations. Counsel terminated employees on outplacement and job search strategies, and coordinate with career counselors and outplacement agencies

Strategic Planning:

  • Collaborate with the Innovation, Knowledge Management and Business Development teams on strategic initiatives

  • Support Corporate Strategy Committee on meeting planning, drafting of minutes and implementation and follow through of departmental strategic initiatives

  • Identify and report trends regarding attrition, morale, training, etc. and formulate recommendations

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Support Firm diversity and inclusion and women’s initiatives to ensure that the professional needs of diverse attorneys, women and those on reduced schedules are being addressed

  • Work with attorneys to achieve the Firm’s pro bono goals and commitments

  • Monitor time entry and productivity by timekeepers in the Department


  • The ideal candidate will have been a Corporate lawyer with experience in professional development at a large law firm for at least 7+ years

  • Strong understanding of corporate transactional practices, and an interest in, or experience with, practice management

  • Robust leadership and management skills

  • Extremely well organized with excellent follow through

  • Enthusiasm for the development of our professionals

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills

  • Entrepreneurial and self- motivated

  • Multi-task and effectively prioritize competing demands on time and attention

  • Flexibility to work outside regular business hours as needed
