The Director of Apartment & Off-Campus Living serves as a key leadership member in the Office of Student Living. Reporting to the Senior Director, Student Living, the Director provides vision, supervision, and management for the on-campus apartment area (approximately 2,000 students) as well as for the program that supports students whom live off-campus (approximately 12,000 students). The Director is responsible for directly supervising an Assistant Director and an Administrative Specialist and is responsible for indirectly supervising four to six full-time live-on staff, one graduate assistant, and up to 40 student staff.

This position also provides leadership for all of the day-to-day operational aspects of the Office of Student Living. This includes, but is not limited to: development of main desk policies and procedures, residential safety and security initiatives, health and safety checks, opening and closing processes, and resolution of facilities/maintenance concerns. The Director provides support to individual students (and indirectly through staff supervision), problem solving and referral services, educational outreach, and crisis support. Provides leadership to the Office of Student Living in the areas of technology and residential operations.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in human resources administration, student personnel, higher education, or related field required.

• Minimum of 6 years post-master’s experience in Residence Life / Student Affairs required.

• Minimum of 8 years post-master’s experience in Residence Life / Student Affairs preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Must be well versed in staff management, training, development, and budget administration.

• Demonstrated expertise and experience at the professional level in at least three of the following specialized areas in residence life in addition to the general knowledge of all other areas:

– Residential facility operations.

– Off-Campus and Commuter Student Services.

– Residential safety, security, and crisis processes.

– Main desk administration and oversight.

– Upper-division educational initiatives.

– University-focused apartment administration.

– Information technology.

• Demonstrated ability to engage in work that is highly collaborative; demonstrated skills in negotiation.

• Strong desire and demonstrated ability to connect with students.

• Demonstrated leadership style that is highly visible and accessible to department staff and students.

• Confirmed skills in problem solving, decision-making, and emergency response.

• Demonstrated ability to supervise student, professional and administrative staff, use performance appraisals, and teach job skills.

• General knowledge of residence hall operations and facility management is required.

Responsibilities

• Provides supervision to the Assistant Director for South Campus, Off-Campus, and Commuter Living (approximately 2,000 students on South Campus apartments and 12,000 off-campus students). This also includes direct supervision of one administrative specialist and indirect supervision of four to six full-time live-in staff, one graduate assistant, and up to 40 student staff. Manages staff feedback and performance concerns, as well as professional development opportunities. Engages staff in the Performance Partnership process.

• Provides leadership for the day-to-day operational aspects of the residential experience (for apartments and traditional residence halls). This work is imperative as it supports one of the foundational goals of the Office of Student Living, which is to ensure that all residential students have a safe, secure, and functional, place to live. This includes:

– Ensuring that residential safety measures are in place and followed.

– Collaborating with the Director of Residence Life to ensure that consistent Main Desk processes and procedures are established.

– Serving as liaison to the US Postal Service, UPS, FedEx, etc.

– Coordinating departmental health and safety checks.

– Coordinating all opening and closing processes, as well as Thanksgiving and Spring Break processes.

– Addressing and problem solving student issues and concerns regarding safety and facility issues.

– Coordinating the annual Fire Safety Academy for Resident Advisors.

– Representing the Office of Student Living at facilities and renovation meetings.

– Leading technology efforts for the Office of Student Living.

– Serving as liaison with the Department of Public Safety, the Housing Office, Fix-It, Facilities Services and Campus Planning, Design and Construction.

• Provide day-to-day oversight for South Campus, Off-Campus and Commuter Student Support & Educational Functions

– Serve as a resource and referral conduit for students; train staff in these functions

– Provide appropriate and engaging educational and community-focus events and initiatives

– Oversee communications for the South Campus and Off-Campus Student Populations

– Establish connections and relationships with area landlords, the Office of Housing, Meal Plan, and ID Card Services, Student Legal Services, Facilities Services, Military and Veterans Affairs, the Graduate School, Government Relations and Community Relations, and more in order to appropriately engage, support and refer students

– Direct the work of staff to ensure major initiatives (South Campus Welcome Back, Taste of Westcott, Ten Tons of Love, etc.) are managed effectively and efficiently

– Direct assessment efforts for South Campus and Off-Campus populations.

– Effectively communicate student needs, issues, and concerns.

– Maintain visibility in the South Campus Apartment Community.

• Departmental leadership and general administrative responsibilities. This includes:

– Serving on the leadership team for the Office of Student Living.

– Acting on behalf of the Senior Director, Student Living as needed.

– Addressing parent issues and concerns.

– Participating and leading portions of departmental strategic planning.

– Conducting assessment and engaging in data-driven decision-making.

– Facilitating staff meetings.

– Participating in professional and paraprofessional staff recruitment, selection, and training activities.

– Budget oversight for designated areas.

– Coordinates the on-call schedule for all professional staff.

– Provides leadership in addressing for departmental technology needs.

– Coordinates crisis response training for Office of Student Living staff.

– Serves in the Office of Student Living on-call rotation.

• Engages in professional development activities, both on-campus as well as with regional / national professional organizations. This is to maintain professional skills, stay abreast of national trends and best practices, and maintain high visibility of Syracuse University for potential candidates. Participation in national organization committees/leadership opportunities, engaging in presentations and/or publications, and sharing knowledge gained is expected and encouraged.

– Participates in the formal and informal evaluation process.

– Serves on University, Divisional, and Departmental committees as requested.

– Participates in Syracuse University and Division Enrollment and the Student Experience staff development, orientation sessions, and on-boarding sessions.

Actively engages in cultural competency development. Determines, in partnership with supervisor, what learning goals and opportunities to take part in. Provides a summary of how learning is being incorporated into practice.
