This position will assume responsibility for several of the projects that the Manufacturing Strategy team is driving and will report to the VP leading the Manufacturing Strategy team. As Zymergen looks towards the future, we need to build in scalable business processes to enable our technology to have its greatest impact. Manufacturing Strategy plays a central role in identifying these needs, developing solutions, and implementing them. We expect this individual to focus on one or two projects such as those listed below (these are examples), with others developing over time.

Long term goals and roadmap - Support the articulation of a 3 year roadmap for Manufacturing that reflects several possible commercial scenarios Zymergen may address, several possible delivery models, the capabilities Manufacturing will need to have in place to address them, and the most resource efficient way to do so. This is of particular importance as Zymergen is beginning to develop our internal product portfolio and will have evolving needs over the next 3 years. This project is in collaboration with corporate strategy, MFG leadership, and others.  

Unit economics - Continue our progression in developing an approach and tools to understand and report on our unit costs so that we can move towards activity based costing. This is a critical step to help us assess the profitability of our different programs and business opportunities. This project is in collaboration with finance, MFG engineering, supply chain, and others.

Improved technology deployment model - Work with our colleagues in MFG engineering, technology, NPI, and others to implement an improved model for preparing for and onboarding new technology & processes into our production environment. Lead change management efforts, facilitate process discipline, drive business case development, and potentially facilitate skills development work for individuals needing to take on new responsibilities.

There are opportunities for promotion within the MFG Strategy team, as well as on other teams within Zymergen that require a similar skill set, including roles in Business Development, Corporate Strategy, Corporate development, Technology, and Development. 

The individual will need to bring the following skills to the role: 

Experience designing and executing cross-functional business processes within organizations, including working collaboratively with other teams, leading through influence, managing projects through execution, and following up to ensure success

Analytical problem solving skills - experience structuring problems, identifying priority areas of focus and hypotheses to test, assessing relevant quantitative information, uncovering patterns and determining implications of findings

Communication skills - ability to communicate hypotheses, findings, methodologies, and recommendations in written and verbal form in a manner that facilitates collaboration and business impact. Communication both with senior executives and leaders as well as front line contributors is essential, across a large variety of backgrounds and functions.

Data handling and quantitative modeling skills, including expertise with Excel and the ability to coach others is needed.

Background or experience in biology, microbiology, molecular biology

Minimum Requirements:

5-8years of work experience with experience in management / strategy consulting, corporate strategy or corporate development, operational strategy, or business development

Bachelor's degree in STEM related field and 8 years of related work experience, or; 

Master's degree in STEM or Business Administration and 6 years of related work experience, or; 

PhD in STEM related field and 5 years of related work experience

Industry experience in biotechnology, biopharma, or other life sciences preferred

Key skills / capabilities:

Ability to manage projects effectively and often several at a time

Ability to balance attention to detail with an understanding of getting to an answer quickly - effective “80/20” judgment

Ability to structure own work and priorities, drive to output and solicit input where needed from colleagues

Proven ability to work effectively in cross-functional, cross-disciplinary teams

Excellent interpersonal skills and people management skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including slide writing, oral presentations, and meeting facilitation)
