The ACLU of New Hampshire (ACLU-NH) seeks a Director of Community Engagement to manage its organizing campaigns, build volunteer capacity across the state, and engage with community partners to advance civil rights. Under the direction and supervision of the Political Director, the Director of Community Engagement will manage a team of two full-time staff organizers and will be responsible for engaging ACLU-NH’s volunteers around taking action on civil rights in NH. This is an exciting opportunity to provide vision, leadership, and support to an organizing program that focuses on the most important civil rights issues of our time, including racial justice, voting rights, and LGBTQ rights. The Director of Community Engagement will spend 50 percent of their time on management, strategic planning and leadership, and 50 percent of their time directly engaging with volunteers and on-the-ground organizing work. This position will work closely with the organization’s Communications, Political, and Legal departments, coalition and community partners, and the national ACLU. The position will be based out of the ACLU-NH’s office in Concord, with the potential for travel throughout the state (Note: ACLU-NH has a generous mileage reimbursement policy). Due to COVID-19, relocation to New Hampshire will not be immediately required, with eventual relocation being determined by the final candidate and the ACLU-NH Executive Director. PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:


Manage a team of two full-time organizers, each with their own programmatic goals and responsibilities. Organize, manage, and develop the team according to best practices for equity and inclusion.

Develop organizing campaign plans, and turn goals and strategies into tactics, timelines, and metrics. Ensure that plans are informed by a strong race equity analysis of the ways in which the work can be influenced by the perspectives of under-represented people.

Develop and strengthen relationships with coalition partners, community leaders, and other state advocacy groups; proactively identify opportunities for the ACLU-NH to support and amplify the work of partners.

Develop and implement ACLU-NH organizing initiatives across the state, aimed at sustaining and building statewide organizing capacity.

Develop and implement strategies to expand the ACLU-NH’s volunteer corps through recruitment, training, stewardship, and ongoing engagement.

Plan and manage events to raise visibility and support for campaigns and priority issues; support and participate in community partners’ events.

Develop advocacy materials including fact sheets, toolkits, action alerts, and social media content.

In collaboration with the Communications Department, identify and execute opportunities to leverage field activity for earned media coverage.

Manage ACLU-NH’s field data, including management of affiliate Voter Activation Network (VAN), and organizers’ quantitative and qualitative program reports.

Ensure successful implementation of advocacy technology tools, including distributed organizing tools such as peer-to-peer text messaging, e-mail, and phone calls.

Provide periodic briefing to the ACLU-NH Board of Directors on the affiliate's organizing work.

Manage the budget for organizing campaigns, working with the ACLU-NH’s Political Director and Operations Manager to track expenses.

Ensure that field programs for national/federal campaigns executed in New Hampshire are done in concert with state and local advocacy campaigns, and in collaboration with coalition partners in state.

In collaboration with the Political Director, mobilize ACLU-NH volunteers to engage on priority legislation, including outreach to elected officials and participation at legislative hearings.


QUALIFICATIONS:


Demonstrated commitment to advancing the ACLU’s values, mission, and goals, with an understanding of the range of civil rights and civil liberties issues and their implications.

Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion, and raising and centering the voices and leadership of people who have been directly impacted by the issues the ACLU champions.

Minimum of five years of previous organizing experience.

At least three years experience in full-time, on-the-ground organizing, including volunteer recruitment, development, and management.

At least two years experience managing organizing programs and supervising paid organizing staff.

Experience managing program and staff resources with consideration for short and long-term plans and objectives.

Ability to manage multiple ongoing organizing programs at once with the ability to manage details and follow-through with minimal direct supervision.

A commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance.

Track record of centering the voices and leadership of directly impacted people in organizing programs.

Demonstrated ability to create and sustain coalitions of diverse individuals or groups.

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including experience with public speaking and facilitating meetings and trainings.

Exceptional interpersonal skills, including an ability to navigate and resolve conflict in a manner that values and respects relationships with colleagues inside and outside of the ACLU.

Effective time management skills and the ability to work under pressure, including short-term crisis management and rapid response.

A flexible team player who works collaboratively and shares responsibility and credit.

Ability to manage a flexible work schedule, including some evenings and weekends.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


Experience with virtual organizing.

Experience managing field and organizing programs for issue-based campaigns.

Experience managing multiple campaigns simultaneously.

Experience with volunteer management software, including VAN.

Experience with distributed organizing, including meaningfully developing volunteer leaders.

Previous experience working with a non-profit board a plus.
