Clinical nurse manager in a busy community health center setting. The position manages the nursing department including Assistant Directors of Nursing; Charge Nurses, Nurse educator, Medical Assistants, LPNs, RNs, the Lab and the Lab Supervisor and Clinical Nurse specialist for nutrition. Also, Community Health Workers, Medical Case Managers and Specialty Nurses. The Director of Nursing ensures efficient and effective service provision across all nursing areas.Supervises and participates in the provision of care to individuals, families, and groups within this setting through the implementation and evaluation of health services and programs provided by the clinic. Demonstrates competency in treating patients ages newborn, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. As a member of the management team participates in the overall management of the health center.

Professional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills required.

Must regularly communicate relevant information learned at Board, Management and other meetings with assigned supervisors and staff members. This can be accomplished via regular staff meetings, departmental e-mails, memos, or communication with individual staff members.

Communication with supervisors and management must also routinely occur, including relaying information gathered from assigned staff members back to management.


Oversees the administration of departmental personnel issues, including interviewing and hiring, performance management, discipline and discharge, training and development of assigned staff members to meet or exceed minimum departmental performance standards either directly or through subordinate managers.

Supervises the nursing and medical support staff. This includes oversight of the nursing staff’s daily activities, scheduling nursing staff, handling performance reviews, orienting nursing staff, providing necessary education/training to nursing staff. Conducts monthly nursing meetings and arranges for staff education at least quarterly.

Monitors the daily flow. Facilitates patient progression from triage to check out. Responsible for nursing staff/medical support staff’s daily schedule. Ensures that supplies that are necessary for the delivery of services are in stock and available.

Is fluent in the Patient-Centered Medical Home standards and ensures adherence to PCMH standards within the nursing department.

Oversees and writes nursing policies and procedures including infection control and CLIA waived testing.

Oversees performance of therapeutic measures within health center policy passed on the legal guidelines of the Nurse Practice Act.

Aware of scope of practice for all levels of staff including RN, LPN, MA.

Oversees the provision of supportive services for patients by nursing follow up of abnormal labs, no-shows, advice calls. Ensures nursing communication with clients through phone calls, sick call, ER and hospital discharge follow up.

Oversees nursing department staff in interpreting lab results and follow up on abnormal results, including pap smear results.

Collaboratively works with other departments regarding patient education and rehabilitation including promotion of mental and physical health. Maintains current health information materials for patients.

Maintains a knowledge of emergency equipment and procedures, ensure that the emergency equipment is checked weekly, and that all nursing/medical support staff is comfortable with the use of emergency equipment.

Responsible for ordering and oversight of all medical equipment and supplies.

Is a key resource for infection control and co-chairs the infection control committee. 

Responsible for maintaining high levels of customer services and customer satisfaction related to assigned departments. Implements quality improvement efforts related to customer service.

Is a resource person to other health center staff including clerical staff, nurses, social services and providers.

Attends and actively participates in scheduled staff, clinical committees, management team meetings and Board of Trustees meetings.

Participates in continuing education for personal and professional growth.

Assist with ongoing Quality Improvement activities throughout the health center.This includes, but is not limited to conducting Joint Commission tracers, serving on QI teams and committees as needed, assisting with staff education and performing data reviews.

Assist with ensuring staff compliance with HIPAA Privacy and Security Regulations on an ongoing basis through staff monitoring. 


Works in a busy community health center in a downtown business district. Long hours are sometimes required.


Physical demands requiring lifting of small pieces of equipment, boxes, and/or patients not to exceed over 50 pounds. Mostly standing and walking required. Visual acuity sufficient for frequent reading. Hearing acuity sufficient for holding conversation with or without audio devices.



Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (BSN strongly preferred), and holding a current Massachusetts license to practice professional nursing.

Previous experience in ambulatory care or public health nursing.

At least 5 years of nursing experience at two of which must be as a nursing supervisor.

Excellent organizational and supervisory skills.

Outstanding clinical and assessment skills.

Bilingual strongly preferred.
