The Director of Public Relations is an exciting role at POET! This position will serve as the company spokesperson and a leading member of POET’s External Affairs and Communications team. This person is responsible for developing and executing national, regional and local public relations and media engagement strategies. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in public relations and crisis communications.Involvement working to advance environment, health, sustainability or social justice issues is preferred.A demonstrated track-record developing media relationships coupled with a comprehensive understanding of the public relations landscape and how various communications channels work (broadcast, print, digital and social) are required. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to take a principal role in driving media coverage of POET’s innovative leadership and promoting the national conversation about the many benefits of renewable biofuels and coproducts. The position reports to the Senior Vice President of External Affairs and Communications and will be based at POET’s corporate headquarters in Sioux Falls, SD.

As the Director of Public Relations, you will ensure that POET’s public relations plans are compelling and consistent to reinforce our vision, mission and priorities.  


Develop and implement strategic public relations plans that advance our strategic initiatives and uphold a positive public image for the company

Manage crisis communications situations, coordinate media outreach and serve as the on the record spokesperson

Draft and edit speeches, press releases, statements, op-eds, online posts and other necessary content

Promote awareness of POET’s vision and mission to outside audiences via public relations tools

Engage and pitch national, regional and local media

Learn the details of our business, including production practices, products and target audiences

Work with third parties to advance our public relations priorities



Understanding of media outreach and engagement

Experience successfully dealing with crisis communications situations

Demonstrated success working on issue-based communications and/or policy advocacy through messaging, positioning, media and communications strategy, journalism, branding and constituent engagement

Experience with environmental, health, sustainability and air quality issues, social justice initiatives and/or automotive and engine performance knowledge is a plus

Track record of successful campaigns in thought leadership, executive visibility and global research findings

Writing and editing material in multiple voices (local stakeholders, team members and senior staff)

Organizational skills, managing tight deadlines and multiple projects at the same time

Position complex subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements and results

Excellent oral and written communication skills and formal presentation skills

Self-motivated, organized, and able to manage assignments independently

Ability to make technical subjects and production terms relatable to the public

Handle confidential and politically sensitive matters

Understanding of AP Style

Interest in political and public affairs issues

Familiarity with Public Relations software and tools, Microsoft Office Suite and the ability and willingness to learn new software applications

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing, public relations or a related field required
