Job Summary 


The Director, Retail Intelligence & Strategy (DRIS) is Blue Chip’s subject matter expert, strategic lead and lindustry voice in the critical area of retail and shopper marketing. This DRIS is the expert investigator, intelligence resource, and strategist as it relates to our clients’ top retail customers across channels.


Retailers include, but are not limited to, Walmart, Amazon, Kroger, Albertsons/Safeway, Publix, Meijer, Ahold, HEB, Target. The DRIS uncovers and understands their marketing strategies, initiatives, calendars, pricing strategies, advertising options, key personnel, and overall priorities. The DRIS employs a wide range of approaches to gather this information, which might include online research, relationship building, client calls, conference attendance, vendor meetings, and so forth.


As a part of the Strategy, Planning and Research team, the DRIS will work closely with our strategic planners to leverage retail intelligence to inspire and develop strategies that meet our clients’ objectives. 


The DRIS works in close collaboration with the VP Communications Planning and senior retail planners, and reports directly to the SVP, Strategic Planning and Research.

Retail/Strategy Responsibilities 


•Develop & share expert knowledge of key retailers to our internal teams and our client partners


•Gain a deep understanding of our current client retail priorities/challenges


•Gather information from a broad spectrum of channels/types of tactics (grocery, mass, convenience, specialty, ecommerce, home improvement, dollar, etc.)


•Share out key retailer intelligence with the broader cross functional and client teams from a place of subject matter expertise, via POV pieces and recommendations 


•Build relationshipswith our clients’ customer sales teams and key retailer contacts


•Keep pace with the fast changing retailer landscape and priorities


•Consult with our strategic planners as they build strategies and executions 


•When appropriate, lead the strategic development process and create shopper briefs


•Understand retailer target shoppers and how to apply numerator data to help formulate strategy


•Work with Sr. Retail Media Planner to understand what shopper marketing vendors and retail media networks can offer for each of the key retailers 


•Work with analytics team and planners to analyze data to frame up the business opportunity (target shopper ponds, where to source volume from, etc.)


•Work with analytics team, strategic planners to understand results of previous retailer programs and campaigns the agency has managed for our clients


•Stay up-to-date on innovative new opportunities in the retail/shopper space


•Build relevant expert knowledge of industry trends and best/next practices through research, one-on-one meetings, conferences/webinars, and trade publications


•Own, maintain and catalogue vendor/retailer info and knowledge on our proprietary Retail Intelligence Hub for ease of access by all team members (by vendor, objective, retailer, marketing goal, calendars, media offerings, key contacts, pricing strategies, trade plans, etc.) 


•Develop and maintain retailer “hot sheets” on our top retailers for internal and external use


•While working with key customers, uncover test and learn opportunities that our clients can participate in (work closely to share these opportunities with our planning and activation teams)


•Collaborate with cross functional teams and build partnerships across multiple teams. 


•Support the agency’s marketing efforts by way of content development, thought leadership, speaking opportunities, relating to media


•Assist in business development and organic growth opportunities as needed


•Travel to retailer headquarters and key client meetings as needed


Team Leadership 


•Support SVP of Strategic Planning & Research on group and/or department needs


•Provide leadership, ongoing feedback, motivation, and training for the agency and SPARQ team


•Mentor and grow staff as needed


•Champion change, process and communication


•Demonstrate a working leader approach and support business development efforts as needed


•Responsible for maintaining up to date weekly time tracking for yourself and your team 


•Comply with all corporate and departmental standard operating procedures 


•Ensure all activities and operations are performed in compliance with federal regulations

Education, Experience, Certifications and Memberships 


•8+ years experience Shopper/Customer/Trade Marketing within the retail industry


•Proven expertise with key strategies/intelligence of top 10-15 retailers in US, demonstrated by:


oExpertise with key retailer’s strategies/priorities and ability to apply this expertise within key client’s business


oRepresenting the voice of the retailer and its shoppers within the agency to articulate shopper plan priorities


•Solid working knowledge of the retail landscape, specifically Grocery, Specialty & Military, Drug, Home Improvement, Mass & Club, Convenience & Dollar and E-Commerce channels


•Strong understanding and passion for retail marketing


•Proven success building relationships with retailers


•Ability to work in highly flexible, ever changing entrepreneurial environment


•Experience working with agency business leadership and planning departments
