We have an exciting opportunity to lead the "Flagship" branch of the largest YMCA Association in New Jersey. Future plans call for a capital campaign and construction of a new YMCA in the service area. Under the direction of the Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, the District Executive is responsible for the overall performance and strategic positioning of all operations in the assigned district. The District Executive will have direct responsibility for operations of the West Essex YMCA Branch location and oversight responsibility for operations at the Wayne YMCA Branch location. This position provides executive-level leadership for all assigned staff throughout the district and executive-level oversite for all operations to include volunteer management, fiscal management, financial development, membership and program administration, facility and equipment stewardship, community relations, communications, and marketing. The position is responsible for leading a district with an overall operating budget of $14 million, approximately 15,500 members and program participants, served by 75 plus staff and volunteers.


Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in human services, nonprofit management, business or social services; Master's degree preferred.

YMCA Multi-Team or Branch Leader Certification required or must be obtained within a limited period of time; Organizational Leader Certificate preferred.

Minimum 6+ years of progressive management experience in a full facility Branch, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency showing sustained operational growth.

Demonstrated ability to produce positive results in key areas of branch management to include staff development, budgeting and fiscal management, risk management, membership recruitment and retention, board and volunteer development, financial development and facility management/operations including renovations and/or construction and expansions.

Strong business operations background with a proven track record for producing growth and strong financial performance.

Demonstrated commitment to the mission, purpose, and cause of the YMCA.

Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships within an organization and with the external community.

Proven communication skills, to include both written and verbal communications, as well as demonstrated platform and public speaking ability.

Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff, volunteers, members, funders, and members of the business community.

Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Essential Functions

Represent and promote the YMCA in the local and regional community and develop positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities. Develop, maintain, and model collaborative relationships with community agencies and constituents throughout the district service delivery area.

Coordinate the development of the respective branch boards and associated committees. Develop strategies to increase volunteer involvement at all levels of assigned branches, including board development.

Develop, manage, and/or oversee the management of all assigned branch budgets in order to meet or exceed budget targets. Initiate and/or oversee budget adjustments to ensure balanced operations.

Provide executive-level direction and leadership for the overall financial development activities of all assigned branches. Is accountable for achieving the overall annual support goals for the district.

Provide leadership and support to assigned branch executive (s) to ensure financial and operational targets are met. Oversee multi-locations, and any facility construction/renovation and expansion projections.

Work collaboratively with members of the management team to develop short-term and long-term strategies and execute an integrated, multifunctional plan of work across assigned locations.

Continually review and evaluate key performance measures to ensure continuous improvement across all areas of operations; lead the development of corrective action plans and strategies as needed.

Identify area for inter-branch cooperative programming to accomplish YMCA goals and realize operational efficiencies.

Support the implementation of Association-wide initiatives to attract, recruit, and retain members.

Oversee the hiring, training, development and supervision of branch staff.

Ensure the safety and maintenance of high-quality facilities, grounds, and equipment.

Create a member-focused culture and model relationship-building skills in all interactions.

Foster a climate of innovation to develop member/participant focused programs that support the overall YMCA mission, goals and strategies.

In alignment with the overall strategic plan, develop long and short-range plans for the expansion of programs and services within the district.

Travel throughout the district service areas to meet with potential membership and/or program partners.

Collaborate with marketing and communications team to develop marketing messages and resources to support the membership and program growth strategy.

Keep abreast of trends and issues in the community related to membership and program philosophy and strategies.

Ensure the diversity and inclusion are embraced and incorporated into business practices.

Network to build contacts, collaborations, and fundraising in the community.
