The Heritage Park Early Learning Center is where children learn to play and play to learn. The center has over 200 children and 40 full and part-time staff. The Early Childhood Executive Director is responsible for administering the management policies, procedures and curriculum for the Infant, Toddler and Preschool, Early Head Start, Head Start and RI State PK classrooms. In addition to training, developing and supervising staff, this position includes ensuring a developmentally appropriate program that incorporates the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards, the Head Start Performance Standards and the RI Comprehensive Early Childhood Education Standards.


1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent

2. At least 24 credits in Early Childhood preferred

3. Must have a minimum of 3 years of related experience as a Coordinator or Supervisor of an Early Childhood program; 5 or more years preferred;

4. Must meet DCYF requirements prior to start date

5. Must have a valid driver’s license

6. Obtain CPR/ First Aid with 3 months of hire

7. RIELDS certification preferred or ability to obtain with first year

8. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community

Essential Functions

Prepare the annual budget for the center in consultation with the Senior Executive Director of Childcare, administer the budget; taking appropriate actions to ensure fiscal soundness

Trains, develops, supervises, and directs Front Desk Staff,Lead Teachers and Teacher Assistants and volunteers using the RI Workforce Competencies related to the position

Reviews and evaluates staff performance yearly and creates Individual Professional Development Plans within 30 days of hire.

Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals

Assures compliance with DCYF, Head Start, State PK and Bright Stars as they relate to program areas including ADA accommodations where appropriate.

Ensures that YMCA program standards are met and safety procedures are followed.

Maintains records essential for control and evaluation

Develops and maintains relationships with state child care licensing agency, School Departments, Kids Connect, and Head Start and RI PK partners

Responds to all parent or community complaints in a timely manner

Assists in the marketing of the program

Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the program yearly and develop a Program Improvement Plan with action steps to be monitored quarterly

Ensure program lesson plans and curriculum are developmentally appropriate to the ages served (using the Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards—RIELDS)

Ensure child assessment data is authentic and done in a timely manner (3 times per year)

Coordinate with Child Out

Conduct monthly staff communication with all Early Childhood staff

Develop a weekly schedule for presence in designated classrooms to observe program, interactions, audit paperwork, address issues and support all teaching staff

Ensure center is well supplied with the materials needed for quality

Creates and Implements Family activities to engage families within the school community

Develop and maintain a parent advisory committee (to help facilitate goals, program priorities and family engagement)

Create a monthly Family Newsletter to inform families about what is happening in the school

Attend designated staff functions, including monthly board meetings, staff meetings and childcare meetings

Maintain confidentiality regarding staff, families and children at all times

Create a welcoming environment as families enter the building.

Engage in active listening with families in order to build relationships, understand individual’s goal and interests and take the initiative to assist in their achievement of these goals
