Electrical Engineer – 3D Printing


The purpose of this position is to drive the design and define electrical systems for the ElemX Metal 3D Printer. The Engineer will lead and participate in projects that create new emerging technologies and translate them into prototypes, models, and interfaces to ultimately transfer as part of a time to market (TTM) product development process. The engineer is responsible for design, development, and execution for the systems assigned in project roles and significant technical activities.


  • Provide technical leadership by defining approaches to address difficult technical problems, implementing key technical work, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations to ensure the delivery of project objectives

  • Design, develop, and specify electronic products/components

  • Engineer electro-mechanical systems for 3D printers

  • Develop and implement governance systems and reporting

  • Define schematics and wiring diagrams

  • Design connectivity for the different systems based on Industry standards

  • Develop and mange design verification and report for the systems

  • Exercise initiative in adapting and applying procedures to address unusual problems and resolve conflicts

  • Work with many disciplines to ensure system function

  • Function as a thought leader in generating new ideas, new areas to explore, and new ways to be effective.

  • Strong contributor to quality invention generation, often the initiating inventor on many of the ID's

  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers on design and testing of electromechanical systems

  • Support Manufacturing to bring products into production

  • Other responsibilities as directed and assigned


  • Degree in Electrical Engineering with 10+ year of experience

Strong technical skills including:

  • Experience working with 3-phase power including 480VAC

  • Experience with electronics including schematic capture

  • Experience working on prototypes and production systems

  • Experience working with electro-mechanical systems and components including pumps, piping, motors, cables, electrical system protection, motor starters, control devices, HMIs, etc.

  • Knowledge of component selection for industrial applications

  • Strong documentation and teamwork skills including:

  • Experience with compliance testing such as UL, CSA, CE, NEC & NFPA 79 and compliance houses such as TUV

  • Experience reviewing electrical drawings and providing redlines to designers

  • Experience working with DFMEAs, PFMEAs, and risk assessments

  • Experience working with supporting software packages including Matlab and PSpice

  • Experience working with 3D CAD software for harness and electrical design especially AutoCAD, Solidworks, or NX

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent teamwork, multitasking, and problems solving skills working on multidisciplinary teams

  • A strong attention to detail
