BAE Systems is looking for an Engineering Director to lead a multi-disciplined group of talented engineers executing the design, development, and transition to production of advanced Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) systems, subsystems, and related hardware. The successful candidate reports to the US Defense Hardware Engineering Director, and can be based in one of several geographical locations. Internally, the role is referred to as the EO/IR Capability Group Lead, and provides an opportunity to shape and foster a dynamic organization singularly focused on delivering best-in-class capabilities to the warfighter. This executive position has responsibility for a growing engineering team of approximately 80 people in several geographically dispersed sites. The role includes application of core engineering processes, hiring and talent development, and product and technology development of a portfolio of products.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Casting and implementation of the mission, vision and roadmap for the group.
Interfacing with product lines from multiple businesses, and others as required, to develop discriminating EO/IR products and technologies.
Overall execution of the organization to be the Internal Supplier of Choice for related products.
Work with external suppliers and services for related products, when warranted.
Ensure technical, schedule, budget, programmatic, and process compliance for all design activities.
Ensure application of engineering processes with emphasis on tailoring to maximize value added.
Attract and retain staff to support the group; and resolve resource and staffing issues.
Identify, hire, and develop critical skills and resources required to meet business needs.
Establish and maintain infrastructure and tools required to meet group objectives.
Typical Education & Experience
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 12 years work experience or equivalent experience
Required Skills and Education
Bachelor s Degree in Engineering and 16 years of work or equivalent experience.
Active DoD Secret clearance and ability to obtain DoD Top Secret.
Extensive technical leadership experience and ability to create alignment within the organization.
Establish goals and standards of performance, budgets, staffing requirements, and short and long-term strategic plans.
Technical understanding of EO/IR product development at the system and subsystem levels.
Knowledge of Optical, Laser, and Opto-Mechanical engineering for DoD and commercial applications.
Practical understanding of product development and the DoD product development lifecycle.
Experience in Design for Manufacturability, Design for Test, and Design to Unit Production Cost.
Proficient in providing technical briefings to internal, executive-level management, and customers.
Proven ability to lead a diverse, and complex organization across multiple sites.
Experience leading an engineering design organization including recruiting, knowledge sharing, and retention of top talent.
Ability to define, develop and maintain critical skills in support of the business.
Highly experienced in facilitation and cross-organization communications.
Experience with resource planning, staff development and management reporting.
Exceptional ability to allocate and assign resources to technical tasks and manage the resources toward efficient utilization.
Proven performance in management, mentoring, coaching and communication skills.
Demonstrated critical thinking skills and decision-making abilities.
Responsibility and ownership of the engineering-related processes in the Engineering Process Framework.
Experienced in reviewing and approving Basis of Estimates and proposals including assessment of associated risks and opportunities.
Preferred Skills and Education
Advanced degree in Engineering plus 20 years of industry experience.
Experience in managing the development of digital and firmware technologies.
Experience in moderate to high volume manufacturing of EO/IR products.
Experience with organization implementation of Model Based Engineering
Experience with the application of Lean Six Sigma, AS9145 and APQP principles in product development.
Active Top Secret clearance.
