Working as the Laboratory Manager you will be responsible for the implementation of the quality management program, including quality monitors, quality control, financial performance and supervision of daily operations for the assigned clinical laboratory departments. The position reports directly to the Laboratory Administrative Director.


Core Functions:


Manages laboratory operations to ensure the provision of comprehensive departmental services that accomplish the business objectives of the organization.

Works collaboratively with medical directors, administrative director and other subject matter experts to provide input into laboratory goals, long-range strategic operational planning, care and service design, budget planning, development of policy and procedures, and future department growth. Leads and is an active participant in system laboratory committees.

Implements the quality management program of the laboratory. Uses statistical reports and measurements to track and analyze department performance.Identifies trends and plans corrections to ensure quality and service objectives are met.Reviews, on regular basis overall performance of the assigned departments, including but not limited to, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, turnaround measurements, customer satisfaction measurements, employee satisfaction, and other benchmarks in support of business objectives.

Manages the department in a fiscally sound manner, including budgeting, supply control and resource management. Ensures that adequate equipment and supplies are available and maintains appropriate levels of inventory to provide department services.

Oversees the human resource management of the assigned departments, including the recruitment and retention of adequate staff. Conducts performance evaluations and participates in coaching and counseling opportunities.Ensures that professional development needs of staff are met/ Creates opportunities for staff to develop their skills and abilities.

Manages a competency assessment program that ensures appropriate training and orientation of new department employees. Ensures competency assessment for all testing personnel are performed and documented in accordance with accreditation guidelines. Assures that existing staff are trained on newly adopted procedures.

Maintains a focus on excellent customer service. Serves as an expert resource to laboratory clients and the organization. Represents department at meetings and on committees.

Understand and promote process improvement through the principles of lean management.

Ensures that all regulatory and accreditation standards, including CAP, Joint Commission, FDA, AABB and State of Oregon are met. Standards are consistently followed and monitored to ensure continued accreditation and licensure.Maintains up-to-date knowledge of standards and awareness of proposed changes.


Background/Expertise:


Bachelor's of Science degree in a chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory science from an accredited institution.

Minimum of five (5) years of clinical lab or related lab experience;

Minimum of three (3) years of increasing leadership and supervisory responsibilities in a laboratory or healthcare setting; Previous management training and/or leadership experience directly supervising a team is preferred.

Current Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) certification by ASCP, or equivalent certification required.

Knowledge of laboratory information systems and office computer software.

Excellent knowledge of applications of continuous improvement principles.

Must have demonstrated excellent team communication, coaching, facilitating, analytical and process analysis skills.

Excellent customer complaint resolution skills.

Ability to create a positive and learning environment

Knowledge and experience with creating and managing a departmental budget

Familiarity and experience with automated lab equipment such as Roche Module Pre-Analytic, EPIC and SunQuest systems is preferred.
