An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced systems engineer to be part of our integrated propeller systems organisation. In this role, you will lead systems engineering and validation and verification activity for propeller systems, specialising in electronics and electrical products. You will contribute to integrated project teams, drive technical and process excellence, and be responsible for the delivery of assigned technical aspects of projects, spanning multiple products across our global business.


Job Description


Essential Responsibilities



  • Provide systems engineering leadership and act as the technical interface to bridge and influence all stakeholders and functions within assigned projects

  • Application of validation and verification methodologies to qualification and certification of new products

  • Build relationships with customers and suppliers to define systems needs

  • Capture, understand and document all stakeholder requirements, from both external and internal customers

  • Challenge requirements to ensure products are efficiently specified

  • You may also be required to:

  • Review systems for hydraulic or electrically driven aircraft actuation systems

  • Manage system analysis, modelling and simulation

  • Define and review aircraft installation requirements for systems

  • Accountable for the effective delivery of the Systems Engineering activities within required timescales and budgets

  • Review tender documentation to ensure Systems Engineering best practice is embedded for new programmes

  • Contribute to the overall team development and growth through strategic inputs

  • Contribute to the development of a Systems Engineering approach to product development within the business

  • Embed the Systems Engineering approach into the business quality system

  • Develop methods and procedures to ensure EMI/HIRF requirements are accounted for and that ensure products can be qualified to DO160G

  • Own Dowty’s requirements for electronic systems, including electronic controllers, airframe interfacing requirements, electronic sensing and electronic control for hydraulic systems

  • Own power control and distribution for de-icing systems

  • Design requirements for electric motors, controllers and associated modelling


Qualifications/Requirements



  • Degree in Electronics and/or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent knowledge, with significant experience in systems engineering for safety critical electrical and electronic products

  • In-depth experience of leading systems engineering, requirements management and verification and validation projects

  • Previous design and/or experience in aviation electronic systems or a similar highly regulated industry

  • Knowledge of DO-160G, DO-178B, DO-254 and ARP4754A.Conversant with ARP4671.


Desired Characteristics



  • Experience of applying a systems engineering approach to integrated aircraft systems (e.g. a mix mechanical components and electro-hydraulic control systems)

  • An understanding of embedded software

  • Experienced in the use of modelling and simulation tools (MATLAB Simulink)

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Good problem solving and solution building skills

  • Understanding of generic system design philosophy and lifecycle from concept through to commissioning


A good appreciation of the following:



  • Capabilities and limitations of avionics communication busses

  • EMI/HIRF in a propeller environment and implication for propeller control systems and de-icing

  • Power distribution in de-icing and propeller systems

  • Electrical interfaces between sensors, effectors and control units

  • Motion and displacement sensing technologies

  • Electric motors, controllers and associated modelling

  • Electronic control for hydraulic systems

  • Direct and indirect effects of lightning strikes

  • Electrical and electronic design for safety critical systems
