Under the supervision of the assigned supervisor, the Pharmacy Drug Diversion and Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring controlled substance accountability throughout the medication use process, preventing controlled substance misuse/abuse/diversion, and compliance with regulatory requirements throughout the Wake Region. Establishes and maintains a comprehensive surveillance and auditing program to identify gaps in security, accountability and reconciliation and to prevent and detect drug diversion at the entity level and outpatient pharmacy setting as directed. Leads the Diversion Response Team in the investigation of suspected drug diversion incidents, using review of data from automated dispensing systems, as well as other information deemed pertinent. Additional responsibilities include education of healthcare professionals, representation on medical center committees, and collaboration on department and interdisciplinary research initiatives.


  • Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from an accredited School of Pharmacy.

  • Pharm.D. degree preferred.

  • Advanced business degree and completion of a Residency program with three years' experience in hospital pharmacy management preferred.


Active registration with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy required

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Supervises all pharmacy personnel in the processing of physicians' orders, dispensing medication, medication cart filling, medication packaging and IV admixing, employee and hospice prescriptions, patient drug allergies, drug interactions, and performing these duties. 2. Trains new and existing pharmacy personnel to the pharmacy procedures. 3. Ensures proper storage conditions and security of medications in pharmacy and throughout hospital. 4. Participates in continuing education to stay current on drug therapy and hospital pharmacy practice standards. 5. Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building. 6. Builds community and teamwork both inside and outside of the department to create and maintain a positive work environment. 7. Mentors staff members in the areas of responsibility to facilitate and reinforce learning. 8. Monitors the utilization, quantity, quality, and cost of resources and output in the areas of responsibility. 9. Plans, implements, and evaluates programs to ensure that optimal, high quality pharmaceutical care is provided. 10. Fulfills the roles of innovator, leader, and facilitator in areas of responsibility to ensure continuous quality improvement. 11. Fulfills the role of producer to meet or exceed customer expectations. 12. Participates in planning processes by establishing personal goals to support quality improvement efforts and contribute to the achievement of departmental objectives.


  • Ability to communicate on a professional level with physicians, nurses and other professional staff when discussing drugs and drug-related problems

  • Communicates effectively and interacts with patients and caregivers in a positive and professional manner.

  • Delivers requested information in a manner that is supportive, timely and understandable

  • Ability to prioritize workflow and supervise analyst to meet workload demands

  • Ability to learn and adapt to the use of automated information systems in daily practice

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software tools such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and Outlook
