Approximately 60% Administrative and 40% Clinical. Reports directly to the Chief of Staff.
MSSC is a multidisciplinary department with approximately 49 clinical attendings and over 178 clinical support staff which offers inpatient care
services (acute Internal Medicine general medicine, Cardiology, and Medical and ICU), and outpatient services in all medical specialties in addition to invasive and noninvasive procedures and diagnostic units such as interventional cardiology cath lab, endoscopy and bronchoscopy lab, dialysis, unit, chemotherapy, IV therapy unit, EEG, EMG, sleep lab, and radiation therapy unit. The Service Chief supervises 11 sections chiefs including Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology, Cardiology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Hospital Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, and Radiation Oncology.
This position carries with it important responsibilities for medical education and clinical quality assurance. The Kansas City VAMC serves as major teaching site for the University of Kansas School of Medicine Internal Medicine and Neurology residents and fellows as well as medical students from the 3 medical schools in Kansas City metro area.
The Chief, MSSC Service, is expected to have a VA-track appointment as faculty at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and will work collaboratively with the Chairs of Medicine and Neurology from the University of Kansas.
VAMC has started the journey to become a High-Reliability Organization (HRO).
The Chief, MSSC, will devote no more than 40% of the work week in direct patient care or supervising residents/fellows in patient care activities. Research (bench and/or clinical) opportunities with protected time are available depending on applicant's interests and qualifications.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; call required based on the specialty of the physician and unit schedule

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Board Certification Internal Medicine
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: 5 years experience (2 within Leadership roles in a Medical Specialty setting)
Applicants with the following certifications from American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN) are highly preferred: Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). (AHA certification preferred.) The selected employee will be required to receive these certifications prior to assuming clinical responsibilities and ensure current certifications after employment is maintained.
