-Tracking is easy when the detections are accurate, well-separated, and featured, but how can you maintain the same quality state estimates as you lose dimensions, density increases, and features go away?
-Old-school radar operators fault automated tracking and state estimation because it is a deterministic process - it does not learn patterns that a human finds easily. How can we correct that by adding learning to our state estimation and tracking algorithms?
These are actual problems that the scientists and researchers in DEFI are working to solve every day.
As a scientist in DEFI, you will work in small to medium groups of researchers and engineers on projects that typically last 1-3 years. Working on different projects keeps things new and interesting, but the projects don't just stop when our research stops. DEFI is part of FAST LabsTM, which acts as the research and development core of Electronic Systems’ five other business areas. Once we finish the research, we work to transition our programs to those business areas. Our tracking, fusion, and analytic algorithms go to the Command, Control, Communications, and Computers Intelligence, Surveillance, and Recognizance Systems (C4ISR) business area to improve their products that are used by military and intelligence analysts every day. Or they may go to the Electronic Combat Solutions (ECS) business area to add capability to their electronic warfare systems installed on aircraft like the F-35 or B-2. By sitting at the heart of Leading Manufacturing / Operations Company' R&D organization, our research has a direct path through the greater company to enhance the capabilities of American soldiers.
A state estimation scientist at the principal level is expected to lead small to medium teams in the design, development, execution, and implementation of novel, state-of-the-art algorithms and solutions to complex problems. Technical writing is important, as you will be expected to author conference papers, journal articles, and/or invention disclosures. A principal scientist supports business development by contributing to idea generation, proposals, and/or white papers, and is expected to maintain existing customer relationships and build new ones.
Typical Education & Experience
Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 6 years work experience or equivalent experience
Required Skills and Education
We are looking for scientists with foundations skills in one or more of the following who are interested in learning more:
We use standard filtering and smoothing tools (e.g. Kalman filters and particle filters) to improve our state estimates while also implementing application specific enhancements to these tools
Probabilistic models are included to account for uncertainty beyond that of sensor accuracy
We use Bayes nets and other probabilistic graphical models in applications ranging from causal inference to modeling agent behavior
We combine elements of control theory with our trackers to generate an optimal sequence of sensor commands to maximize information from limited sensor resources
We develop metrics to score the quality of our tracking and fusion algorithms against data, and we use custom tools to identify and explain any unexpected results
While it is always best to use real data, frequently it is necessary for us to develop and apply modeling and simulation tools to generate our own data
All of this is typically prototyped in a high level language like MATLAB or Python before being ported to C++, and our scientists frequently present our algorithms and results to customers and at conferences.
US Citizenship is required for this position, as is the ability to obtain a US Security clearance.
