We are currently seeking a Research Forensic Scientist to assist in development and oversight of research projects that align with SAMHSA taskings and assist with toxicology related projects for the National Institute of Justice’s Forensic Technology Center of Excellence (FTCoE) at RTI. The scientist will research, develop, execute and interpret standards for analytical testing (e.g., drug testing in urine, oral fluid, hair, and other body fluids). This position will perform forensic science research tasks, applying standard and established theories, concepts, and techniques, while employing innovative approaches. 

Responsibilities will include:

Research, develop, execute and interpret standards for analytical testing (e.g., drug testing in urine, oral fluid, hair, other body fluids). 

Perform research and provide expertise in forensic toxicology for CFS as well as other RTI centers.

Select from among a wide array of methods to address differing and variable situations, demonstrating interpretative/evaluative thinking.

Mentor more junior project staff members helping them to identify appropriate career paths and goals and providing coaching as well as formal and informal feedback concerning their performance.

Lead project and proposal activities, contributing to the expansion of the center’s, division’s, and institute’s research.

Serve as scientific reviewer of center projects and participate in RTI procurement (i.e. proposal) capture teams.

Promote RTI’s technical capabilities to internal and external clients through project and pre-proposal and/or proposal contracts.

Design projects in a strategic manner that leverages and extends the collective knowledge of the team and their respective analytical skills. 

Devise and implement appropriate control measures to ensure project is proceeding according to regulatory compliance, client expectations, budget and schedule.

Collaborate on multidisciplinary teams in the development of proposals and conduct of projects.

Research, develop and characterize proficiency testing samples to assess the detection of drugs and other measurands in biological matrices. 

Produce QC/QA samples to challenge, monitor, and assess forensic laboratory testing of drugs, drug metabolites, and other measurands. 

Design projects in a strategic manner that leverages and extends the collective knowledge of the team and their respective analytical skills. 

Investigate alternative methods and approaches that address specific research needs.  

Devise and implement appropriate control measures to ensure project is proceeding according to regulatory compliance, client expectations, budget and schedule.

Anticipate problems before they arise, assess potential risk, and develop contingency plans.

Investigate problems, perform root cause analysis and develop and implement corrective actions.

Manage simple projects, including timelines, budgets, and other organizational and project management tasks.

Assist project leaders in identifying ways to enhance or expand existing projects and to develop new project opportunities.

Prepare and present research findings to clients or at professional meetings.

Participate in internal and external audits, as needed.

Gather background information and other documentation to support proposals.

Write proposal sections as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in the chemical or biological sciences and at least 6 years' related experience.

Research experience in forensic toxicology.

Demonstrated record of authorship and publication of research.

Experience in the operation of laboratory equipment (e.g. GCMS, LCMS, LCMSMS).

Working knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Ability to multitask.

Ability to listen and communicate well both verbally and in writing.

Ability to work and collaborate well with others and work independently.

Attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to mentor junior project staff.

Ability to travel occasionally for conferences and inspections.
