Johnson & Johnson Innovation is recruiting a Scientific Engagement Lead of Johnson & Johnson Innovation JLABS.The goal of Johnson & Johnson Innovation is to advance transformative healthcare solutions that improve the lives of people around the world and, in so doing, to deliver value to Johnson & Johnson (“J&J”).JJI accomplishes this by catalyzing new science and technology through collaboration and exchange of ideas. JLABS (“JLABS”) is the external R&D engine of Johnson & Johnson, catalyzing a community of entrepreneurs in health, operating a network of life science incubators focusing and accelerating emerging through its development, and supporting the portfolio to successful partnering and funding.
The Scientific Engagement Lead provides support to the Site Head in all aspects building a world-class scientific/technology portfolio for the regional JLABS site that is aligned to the J&J internal businesses.
Evaluate new technologies and companies aligned to JLABS strategy for entry into JLABS as well as conduct various governance reviews
Identify potential transformational technologies and shape emerging science to address unmet needs
Assess progress and priority of portfolio companies in collaboration with site head to ensure portfolio assets are consistent with J&J strategy
Work with laboratory operations and business operations team to ensure space and revenue planning is aligned with portfolio planning
Support the Site Head to build internal sponsorship for the portfolio with scientific thought leaders, manage portfolio reporting, and information updates database systems
Collaborate across broader J&J Innovation (e.g. Innovation Centers) to support opportunity sourcing
Shaping the local scientific ecosystem:
Foster local academic, biotech, and healthcare agency collaboration and awareness
Lead scientific community outreach programs to engage local community with JLABS
Foster JLABS reputation as a science driven organization externally and internally
Leverage external experts (KOLs) to ensure portfolio is cutting-edge, help evaluate potential opportunities using an external lens, and help influence company creation in strategic areas of interest
Identify partners who can play a role in company formation or identify company formation activities that can synergize with existing J&J research areas
Scientific site leadership:
In collaboration with the Site Head, aid in resident selection and onboarding
Mentor residents to ensure scientific milestones are achieved and JPALS are appropriately matched to form impactful relationships
Serve as scientific SME for JLABS press, events, and internal processes
Perform regular reviews and update on scientific programs of portfolio companies
Ph.D. in a relevant life sciences field is required
5+ years of broad R&D experience, preferably across multiple therapeutic areas and/or technologies is required
Experience with startups for partnerships in industry to achieve milestones, alliance management, building fruitful partnerships with world-class KOLs, and working in an open innovation R&D capacity to leverage external opportunities for pipeline impact is preferred
Experience in creating and evaluating IP portfolios/strategies is required
Established track record working with cross-functional teams in a matrix environment and partnering with/managing stakeholders is required
Excellent leadership, influencing, and decision-making skills, proven ability to foster team productivity and cohesiveness, acting as a change agent, adapting to rapidly changing organization and business environments is required
This role is located in Washington DC with up to 10% travel is required.
The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, be professional, organized and detail-oriented. This is a team-oriented position that plays an integral role in facilitating processes and procedures.She/he will also demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal direction.
