The primary scope of responsibility includes managing the company’s sustainability metrics reporting as it aligns with the company’s sustainability strategy. The role has a global scope, overseeing the impact of the company’s operations and interacting with colleagues globally. This role interacts with both internal and external customers; mainly by leading the creation of the company’s environmental sustainability scorecard internally distributed; and by acting as a point of contact when disclosing environmental sustainability data with external organizations. This position will work in conjunction with business unit teams and Johnson Controls Manufacturing System Principle leads to lead and support as necessary the rollout, implementation, and support of initiatives that will help drive metrics progress, like the Energy Hunt Program. Through this type of activity this position will be able to share best practices, training, and knowledge that will help global locations make progress on their environmental sustainability performance.


How you will do it

This position will act as a manager of the Director of Sustainability Programs, Sustainability Engineer I, and other sustainability program specialists and/or interns. Additional tasks will include the processing of invoices for the Corporate Global Sustainability team.


Sustainability Reporting

Manages and oversees measurement, calculation, and tracking of the company’s sustainability metrics including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, energy, water, and waste for all of Johnson Controls operationally controlled global sites; monitoring data gathering systems to track utility consumption at Johnson Controls facilities.

Leads, manages, and acts as the main point of contact for the company’s third party audit process to verify global energy, GHG, water, and waste annual data. Leads the preparation and post-audit activities needed to achieve a successful outcome.

Leads the completion and submission of the CDP Climate Change, Water, and Supply Chain questionnaires. Acts as the main point of contact with various external sustainability oriented reporting agencies and mandated reporting structures. Remains current and up to date in terms of questionnaire changes and new requirements.

Leads the completion of the environmental section, and review of various other sections for questionnaires including Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), and others.

Acts as the lead point of contact with external sustainability programs and organizations that Johnson Controls belongs to including: U.S. DOE Better Plants, U.S. EPA Green Power Partnership, and others.

Manages strategy to address supplier and customer sustainability requests.

 

Sustainability Strategy

Leads the development of sustainability metrics analyses and projections/forecasts based on projected sales, production volume, labor hours of operation, and/or portfolio changes to provide base and sensitivity cases (what/if analysis) in support of long and short term business plans.

Leads the development of analyses of existing and new environmental sustainability metrics to be used for supporting strategy and tactics.

Assists in development and presentation for developing Global Sustainability Council strategy and tactics.

Leads the approach to quantifying Scope 3 Value Chain emissions accounting.

Supports the company’s “Solutions” and “Performance” pillars under the Global Sustainability council as part of its current Sustainability Strategy.

 

Internal Sustainability Support

Acts as the Global Sustainability lead with other teams within the company including the global energy team within procurement, the environment health & safety organization, among others.

Support the JCMS Environment & Sustainability Principle leader and team, specifically with the Energy Hunt Program including: generation of regular and ad-hoc reports, and the program’s SharePoint site content, including its tools update and maintenance.

Acts as the GHG and Science Based Targets subject matter expert for the company, and leads strategy to support business needs for GHG emissions quantification, not only for our operational footprint, but also including the annual quantification of GHG emission reductions associated with our active performance contracting project portfolio and the sale and installation of energy efficient products and services.

Leads the strategy for procurement of renewable energy on a global basis, working with external advisors to structure contracts for RECs, PPAs and VPPAs.

 

Team Support

Provides informational presentations to lead sustainability scorecard communication with new plants and internal teams.

Applies format and design skills to team’s deliverables, elevating the presentation and quality of the finished products.

Manages Program Support Specialist.

As needed, manages workload and provides guidance for the team’s internship program.

 

Thought-leadership

Attends and presents at external events organized by government agencies, NGOs, trade organizations, etc; Communicates about our work and progress around our current Sustainability Strategy, as well as the sustainability work we do for our customers.

Prepares articles, blogs and other written materials for internal and external publications.


Qualifications

 


Advanced Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology with Public Policy experience.

Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certificate desired.

Strong computer and analytical skills required.

10+ years of experience in a business, consulting, governmental or non-governmental organization focused on energy and sustainability opportunities.

Experience driving voluntary industry action as well as public policy change (legislative and regulatory) impacting sustainability priority areas surrounding energy and efficiency.

Ability to establish effective relationships influencers and policymakers.

Strong base of knowledge in energy, renewable energy & efficiency, GHG accounting, corporate social responsibility reporting, environmental management, product life cycle assessment and design for sustainability.

Deep knowledge of global policy trends in energy and climate, clean energy technology, and ideally science based target establishment, execution and obtainment.

Demonstrated strategic agility and ability to influence others.

Extensive knowledge of global sustainability trends and ability to identify risks and opportunities.

Ability to work collaboratively, engage comfortably with senior executives, work effectively in matrix-oriented global organizations, lead and participate in collaborative decision-making, make effective presentations and engage with peers from other geographies and cultures.

Strong leadership capability to create an engaging, collaborative and innovative work environment.

Excellent verbal and written communication and research skills.

Highly proactive, entrepreneurial and able to navigate ambiguity and complexity while developing successful solutions.

Organized and self-motivated, strong project management skills in order to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously from beginning to end within a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.

High-level creative thinker that proactively seeks out newer, better ways to get things done, using existing resources and creating efficiencies.

Experience developing and mobilizing advocacy campaigns and strategies including leveraging a Political Action Committee would also be valued.

Able to travel approximately 10%.
