The Senior Director of Nanofabrication leads the cross-disciplinary team responsible for the research and development of Illumina’s sequencing flow cells and consumable devices including nanopatterned substrates and semiconductor-based sensing devices.The person in this core technology innovation role oversees and grows Illumina’s internal functional capabilities that include nanofabrication, fabrication processes, surface characterization, metrology, device packaging, and integration of devices with our systems. The role requires a broad grasp of multiple areas of engineering physics and chemistry, the ability to innovate in those areas, and the ability to drive technologies from early concept into a product roadmap.  


Responsibilities


Research new device fabrication technologies that drive the innovation cycle and our product roadmap

Provide leadership to technology roadmaps, guiding teams to explore new disruptive approaches to challenging technical issues

Build capabilities in the key technology components of DNA sequencing devices:materials development, nanofabrication, semiconductor device design, back-end of line packaging, device assembly and test, process development and characterization

Accelerate the growth a high-performing engineering team that is strong both in technology innovation as well as in best practice engineering

Manage teams and projects through the initial research phase though to transfer to product development

Support technical evaluation of design requirements /constraints and guide teams in developing concepts, evaluating risks, and making effective and timely design decisions

Manage resource allocation effectively across multiple projects. Ability to work and lead project teams across multiple global sites

Identify and manage partner/supplier relationships for design, manufacture, and semiconductor fab services

Maintain strong partnership with product development, operations and new product introduction teams to ensure seamless transfer of new technologies into development and manufacturing

Qualifications


Ph.D. or M.S. in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related field with minimum of 10 years relevant industry experience

Proven track record of industry-leading innovation in the field of nanofabrication, device packaging or laminate technologies

Proven track record of cultivating and developing novel technologies into commercial products

Demonstrated success in building and growing strong, innovative engineering teams

Demonstrated experience in characterization and testing of complex systems, including design of experiments and root cause analysis

Manage teams through design and process parameter optimization to achieve robust, reliable product function with high yield

Desirable:Specific experience in development of next generation sequencing and/or molecular diagnostic products

Desirable:Experience in optical sensors, digital imaging technologies, optical MEMs, and/or microfluidics

Desirable:Experience in biochips, polymer layers, biologically-functionalized chips/materials
