Position Description

As part of the Growth Squad, you’ll be working on business-critical public pages that impact tens of millions of visitors every year. To power these we built a custom CMS which integrates with many business internal systems to deliver up-to-date information.

Willingness to learn is key since our aim is to help every team member grow. You’ll be working alongside very senior front-end engineers, making this an excellent opportunity to broaden your full-stack experience and in turn help them to improve their back-end skills. Since Toptal is growing at a rapid pace you’ll have plenty of opportunities for personal and professional growth.

This is a remote position that can be done from anywhere. Due to the remote nature of this role, we are unable to provide visa sponsorship. Resumes and communication must be submitted in English.


  • Design, build and maintain outstanding, reusable, and reliable Ruby, JavaScript, and TypeScript code;

  • Build cross-browser solutions optimized for a wide range of devices;

  • Review the work of your colleagues.

  • Cover code with tests and perform manual testing of features, while reviewing the work of colleagues.

  • As a great teammate, continuously improve the team’s processes, brainstorm ideas, and communicate statuses and progress.

  • Mentor other people, provide feedback and grow as a part of the team.

  • Actively participate in meetings including Scrum meetings, squad meetings, pair programming sessions, etc.

In the first week, expect to:

  • Begin your onboarding and integration into Toptal.

  • Meet the mentors that will guide you during the onboarding month.

  • Get acquainted with our tech stack.

  • Get familiar with our back-end architecture and all the tools that we use.

  • Learn about the processes that we follow.

In the first month, expect to:

  • Develop your first tasks and have them deployed to production.

  • Have strong knowledge of Toptal’s business.

  • Contribute to our product development.

  • Develop a deeper understanding of our technology, processes, and product pipeline.

In the first three months, expect to:

  • Deliver value in regular cadence.

  • Get comfortable with the daily work routine of our team.

  • Review code written by your colleagues.

  • Be ready to propose improvements to Toptal’s processes and codebase.

  • Have an understanding of how our public pages stack integrates with the rest of Toptal’s stack.

In the first six months, expect to:

  • Become a key part of the team, be responsible for certain areas, and help others inside and outside of the team.

  • Contribute to planning and executing multi-sprint initiatives inside our team.

  • Lead technical initiatives on our team.

  • Drive improvements to the codebase and processes.

  • Mentor Toptal’s new team members.

In the first year, expect to:

  • On-board, mentor and be part of the interviewing team, in order to support the growth of our top-skilled engineering team.

  • Have 8+ years of web development experience – preference is given to candidates who have worked on large applications of some scale;

  • Have 5+ years of experience working with React;

  • Have 3+ years of experience working with Ruby;

  • Have a confirmed grasp of object-oriented programming, clean code, and best testing practices. Proficiency in Ruby, React, JavaScript, CSS3, and HTML5 is a must. Experience with TypeScript and GraphQL is a plus;

  • Care about multiple quality dimensions like user impact, failure tolerance, code maintenance, implementation time, security breaches, and performance.

  • You have experience with responsive designs;

  • You have experience with performance optimization of web applications;

  • You have experience with creating interfaces with heavy graphics, interactive, with animations is a plus;

  • Have 5+ years of experience working with NodeJs is a plus;

  • On-page SEO knowledge is a plus;

  • Be genuinely interested in technology and love to try new things.
