As an Investment Consultant you will work with and lead a range of clients across superannuation, endowments and foundations and general and life insurance; providing valuable support to our senior consultants - managing projects, conducting analysis, writing reports, asking ‘why?’ and ‘how can this be even better?’, and working with our investment analysts to deliver client reports and insights.

You will have the opportunity to develop your consulting skills through: working closely with senior consultants and clients; developing your people leadership skills through mentoring and oversight for investment analysts; access formal development opportunities to work in different parts of our business; and financial support and study leave to complete your investment or related studies.

Primary focus for the role is to independently manage consulting projects for clients, including design and application of frameworks and methodologies for meeting client needs across the Institutional Wealth service offering. Core activities include contributing to the development of best practices, new applications, and improvements to methods and analytical techniques, and enhancing and expanding Mercer’s intellectual capital.

As a People Manager, this role manages up to 15 colleagues in the Analyst Team; coordinating workflow, developing consulting capabilities; providing feedback; and managing performance.


Apply subject-matter expertise, consulting skills, Mercer methodologies and professional judgment to client projects

Demonstrate intellectual leadership and consistently test final deliverables for completeness, relevance, and high impact against client issues and needs

Plan, design, resource and manage client projects and direct staff in executing the plan to deliver projects on time and within budget

Identify and support new business opportunities

Nurture key client relationships, identify opportunities to broaden or deepen these relationships

Support and lead business development initiatives and proposals

Develop own and other’s capability through informal and formal learning opportunities (may include formal people supervisor or management responsibility)

Lead and / or participate in projects to improve Mercer, in particular talent, quality, service delivery, internal efficiency / effectiveness and intellectual capital

Demonstrate thought leadership through writing points of view, articles and speaking at conferences

Complete investment or actuarial professional qualification


Relevant undergraduate qualification essential, with

Relevant post graduate and / or professional qualification desirable


Experience in delivering and developing investment or actuarial services in corporate and / or consulting contexts

Demonstrated project management experience and the ability to effectively manage people

Depth of expertise in at least one of the Institutional Wealth service offerings

Knowledge and Skills

Experience working in a similar role in a consulting environment, or a senior internal role

Experience in independently managing complex, large and ongoing projects and applying problem-solving skills

Capability to develop solid client management skills, including the ability to develop ‘trusted advisor’ relationships

Ideally a track-record in business development – penetrating existing clients / farming opportunities from market and client development activities

Strong team capability in order to work collaboratively with colleagues in other areas on business development activities, client relationship management and delivery of integrated solutions.

Team leadership capability, including the ability to effectively manage and develop people in project and / or formal supervisory settings

Demonstrable analytical skills and experience using spreadsheets and databases for information analysis

Well-developed communication skills including interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to present recommendations at the senior executive level

Strong report writing skills and ability to meet business deadlines
