The team is seeking a Polymer Materials Engineer to focus on the fundamental, first principles relationships between adhesion, adhesive material properties, and joint strength.This position will be the subject matter expert on adhesives at Tesla and will need to bring a deep technical understanding of common adhesive chemistries, surface chemistry, and their interactions with various substrates.


Responsibilities:


Assume the role as our subject matter expert for adhesives at Tesla

Support on-going adhesive application challenges.Advise manufacturing with respect to manufacturing issues and process or material changes

Support material and process validation for all new adhesives

Curate existing material standards and right new standards as needed.

Manage material validation for new materials

Work with suppliers and Tesla manufacturing teams to develop new adhesives for new applications

This role will support all vehicle related adhesives, sealants, structural foams, and NVH countermeasures.


Requirements:


Polymer or Materials Engineering degree.Advanced degrees or equivalent experience preferred

Fundamental knowledge of polymers and polymer chemistry as they relate to adhesives

Strong understanding of adhesive reaction chemistry

Strong understanding of surface chemistry and adhesion mechanisms

10 years + experience working with adhesives

Experience with standard analytical tools (FTIR, DSC, Rheometry, DMA, etc.)

Thorough knowledge of adhesive dispensing challenges

Strong communication and organizational skills with ability to manage projects independently
