This position has a duel reporting structure to the President of St. Francis Hospital, who also serves as the President of the St. Francis Hospital Foundation, and to the CEO of Catholic Health Services of Long Island (CHS). Primary responsibility, approximately 70% of time, will be devoted to performing the duties as the Senior Vice President of Philanthropy for the St. Francis Hospital Foundation. Secondary responsibility, approximately 30% of time, will be devoted to performing the duties as the Chief Philanthropy Officer for CHS.
Senior Vice President of Philanthropy (SVP) for the St. Francis Hospital Foundation
The Senior Vice President will be expected to bring a highly successful fundraising operation to its next level by employing innovative methodologies which will provide strategic direction, leadership, and daily management of the staff of the St. Francis Hospital Foundation. The SVP will oversee all aspects of fundraising, including prospect identification and management, stewardship, annual giving, major gifts, corporation and foundation giving, grant writing, special events, planned giving, and capital campaigns.
Consults regularly with the President and the Foundation Board to develop fundraising goals, priorities, and short and long-term strategic plans.
Establishes and executes strategies that result in rising standards and expectations.
Maintains a personal portfolio of major gift prospects moving each from identification, through gift closure.
Keeps abreast of changing trends in philanthropy, tax and estate planning regulations, social media fundraising, and plans accordingly to develop new programs which are responsive to the fundraising needs of the hospital.
Designs agendas for quarterly Foundation Board meetings.
Recommends candidates for new board membership to the President.
Oversees all departmental budgets.
Serves as a member of the hospital's Executive Team working collaboratively with colleagues to forward fundraising objectives.
Creates and nurtures a culture of philanthropy throughout the hospital.
Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO) for Catholic Health System
The CPO is the master fundraiser for the System. Main focus is on mentoring all System Foundation Directors and on instituting best practice fundraising. The new CDO will devise a plan together with the Foundation Directors to ensure that all entity fundraising operations continue to mature into fully functioning, robust, fundraising departments which operate with a multi-disciplinary approach to attracting philanthropic dollars from individuals, and foundations and corporations.
After obtaining support for the plan from the CEO, the CPO will meet with all entity Presidents and their respective Directors to roll out the plan, discuss shared goals, and develop a roadmap for achieving success.
Maintain/hire a team of capable, well-trained, professionals with the deep institutional knowledge to lead the fundraising activities for each entity.
Meet with the CHS Foundation Directors as a group on a regular basis to discuss updates in fundraising, most effective donor strategies, and provide advice on challenges as they arise.
Ensure that the patient database at each entity is easily accessible to its Development Department so that prospect identification can be performed on an ongoing basis.
Maintain uniform but separate entity donor databases.
Ensure that all entity quarterly appeals continue to be sent out uniformly to provide a steady stream of philanthropic income. Quarterly mailings will also serve as an additional resource to identify potential major gift prospects.
Require that each entity take advantage of the research staff to provide necessary background information on major prospects, the Grant Writer to increase their bottom lines via foundation giving opportunities and The Planned Giving Director to obtain counsel on standardized planned giving written materials and donor options.
The CPO will ensure that all gift processing, inclusive of donor acknowledgments, receipting, and pledge reminders continues to be uniform throughout the System and that all fundraising teams continue to work collaboratively with their Finance Departments sharing information, keeping abreast of changes in accounting practices and IRS laws as they relate to fundraising.
Ensure that all entities adopt the standardized template for prospect bios and briefings, gift proposals, and pledge agreements throughout the System.
Ensure that gift counting and reporting remain uniform throughout the System. The CPO will create a standardized list of reports to be circulated on a regular basis.
Ensure that special event planning is universalized throughout the System. Entity development professionals will be expected to provide a justification and an objective for each event. They will prepare short briefings, bios and background information on guests (including relationships to the entity) for review by their appropriate leaders and VIPs.
Host an annual retreat for all Development staff to share ideas, inform, partner, and engage with one another to ensure that System-wide objectives are being met.
Credibility in the field including a proven track of personal success in securing six and seven-figure gifts. Success in setting and exceeding ambitious philanthropic goals for a major not-for-profit organization.
Experience in all facets of fundraising.
Major capital campaign leadership experience.
Experience working effectively with board members.
Creative, innovative, and able to devise new approaches to philanthropy.
Able to foster, enhance and expand relationships with existing donors and to influence and identify a steady stream of new supporters.
