Nine PBS is looking for a Vice President and Chief Content Officer to provide intentional leadership and action around the creation and distribution of our content. This position anchors our local content strategy in the identified needs of our community and ensures the look and feel of our content is engaging, contemporary, innovative, and optimized for audiences across multiple platforms. The Chief Content Officer reports directly to the President and CEO and works in partnership with team leaders and the content team to ensure that engaging content is created and that leading-edge distribution strategies attract new audiences to key platforms and strengthen our community.


The Chief Content Officer will cast a thoughtful vision and deliberate strategies to ensure organization-wide opportunities. By taking smart risks, identifying cross-platform opportunities, and bringing new ideas to life, the Chief Content Officer will amplify Nine PBS’s ability to engage audiences and achieve impact. As the content process is iterative, this proven leader will have the ability to embrace the unknown and think and act collaboratively toward meaningful solutions.


Essential Functions:


–     Supervise, nurture, and grow a creative, energetic, mission-driven team


–     Develop short and long-range plans of action for content anchored by community needs and issues


–     Coordinate with the team leaders across Nine PBS to ensure content is aligned with strategies to resource our work


–     Maintain and grow our audiences across platforms by directing the creation of highly relevant content, engaging the viewers and users in our community, and highlighting Nine PBS as a trusted community resource


–     Prioritize and assign tasks for content team


–     Ensure created and sourced content aligns with community needs and core initiatives of Nine PBS


–     Ensure that professional development opportunities are available and continually utilized by content staff to advance and innovate our content efforts


–     Set and maintain quality standards for local content on all platforms


–     Ensure staff and content adhere to Nine PBS values, journalistic, and public media editorial standards


–     Ensure compliance and quality oversight for productions and digital content, including FCC, CPB, PBS, and other reporting requirements, as well as rights management of produced and acquired content


–     Develop, manage, and report on department budgets


–     Represent Nine PBS in the community, and at local and national meetings


–     Maintain and nurture relationships with outside content producers and media partners


–     As appropriate, oversee the work of external content creators


–     Watch over trends in media and other sectors that impact content efforts


–     Monitor and interpret research and information on viewership, audience satisfaction to develop audience optimization strategies


–     Interact with leaders in and out of public media


–     Develop and curate local or national content for pledge programs from internal resources and by forging partnerships through external opportunities


–     Work closely with the Marketing Team to develop a blended, platform agnostic cross-promotion strategy to reinforce the value of content


–     Review and evaluate staff performance against job descriptions and periodically update goals and objectives


–     Other duties as assigned


Essential Skills


–     Expert in all things related to public media content creation and distribution


–     Experience with content production techniques and tools (storytelling, technology, cameras, etc.)


–     Experience with content segmentation, and localization, analytics and meaningful measurement and interpretation


–     A self-starter that is mission-driven and can multi-task with solid organizational, planning, and time-management skills


–     Demonstrated ability to apply a racial equity lens to content creation


–     Ability to include a diverse array of voices in content on-air and in the community


–     Demonstrated ability to coach and develop staff resulting in professional growth and attainment of key performance objectives


–     Demonstrated ability to lead cohesive, diverse, high performing teams, and foster a culture of belonging among all staff


–     Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing


–     Ability to prioritize, work independently and under pressure, meet deadlines, and take and give direction and feedback diplomatically


–     Experience working with diverse communities and optimizing communication using flexible, culturally sensitive strategies


–     Strong leadership skills – leading others by setting clear expectations and communicating clearly


–     Ability and willingness to work a varied schedule, including some nights and weekends


–     Must present a professional manner and appearance


–     Key soft skill competencies include: coaching and developing others, flexibility, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, self-starting, teamwork, and understanding others


Qualifications


·     A minimum of ten years’ experience in content strategy, production, content operations and/or related area


·       Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, or related field is required. Advanced degree in a related area is preferred, but not required


·     Familiarity with Final Cut Pro and other editing software required


·     Proficient in Google Docs, Microsoft Office, Outlook, and OneDrive

·     Type, and sit behind a desk for extended periods of time


·     Look at computer screens and printed documents for extended periods of time


·     Occasionally drive and/or travel on company business
