The Vice President, Chief Applications Architect is the leader of the software engineering and architecture organization at Edmentum. The candidate must be passionate about building great software, great products and great teams that focus and care about our end users. This role requires technical depth and expertise to establish and maintain credibility of a very talented team while also demonstrating excellent leadership and management capabilities. This role partners closely with peers that lead the Development Services, Experience Design, Database Architecture, Data Science, Data Center Operations and Product Management teams to deliver our products.


The Vice President, Chief Applications Architect fosters a culture of collaboration, fun and high performance in an agile environment that attracts and retains the talent needed to build and maintain a world class SaaS platform and product portfolio. This role will manage teams across multiple geographies and will be responsible for establishing the standards and direction to ensure the teams are productive and produce quality work that results in a high performing, exceptional products.


The position will manage a team of approximately twenty full time employees and twelve offshore team members with eight direct reports. These team members are spread across our Minnesota, Texas and Baltimore locations as well as home office/remote.


This role is a highly visible role in the organization that will be responsible for maintaining excellent working relationships with Edmentum’s Executive Leadership Team and leaders in other organizations including Product Management, Curriculum Development, Customer and Technical Support, Professional Services and Sales.


Here's what you'll do:


Establish and articulate the technical strategy and vision for the product platform and develop sequencing plans to move towards that strategy

Demonstrate a deep working knowledge of the technologies used to build our products to establish respect and rapport with the team as a whole and be able to accurately and confidently represent the needs of the team and serve as an advocate for their work

Facilitate and establish the implementation of standard approaches to software engineering and architecture at Edmentum including practices to develop testing, instrumentation and monitoring into our code base

Develop and facilitate a roadmap for modernizing the approaches and technology used at Edmentum and evolving and maintaining that modern approach

Develop and facilitate a strategy for the architecture of the platform including approaches to microservices and cloud-based architectures

Facilitate and establish processes, team structures and approaches to determine how architectural initiatives are developed in coordination with development of the product roadmap

Define clear roles and responsibilities between architectural and software engineering concerns within the team

Define clear communication expectations and ways in which decisions are made, documented and memorialized

Develop, implement and maintain security and data privacy best practices and procedures to maintain the integrity of our products and the trust of our customers

While not expected on a daily basis, have the ability to technically contribute to code, pipelines, technical design and documentation deliverables.

Relentless pursuit of developing expertise our product functionality and processes supporting development, DevOps and operations.

Establish strong working relationships with other teams including quality assurance, product owners and product managers to ensure the architecture team’s work and approach is well understood

Manage, facilitate and drive both team and cross functional initiatives from creation through completion

Develop and maintain vendor and partner relationships and contracts

Manage multiple managers of technically diverse teams

Manage multiple teams in differing geographic locations

Manage, recruit and develop core technical resources

Establish, maintain and relentlessly increase the level of talent on our team through professional development of team members and strong performance management

Perform performance management activities, including the creation of training and career plans for members of the team

Here's what you'll do:


10+ years of related work experience developing, designing, and architecting highly available SaaS or enterprise solutions using the Microsoft.NET technology stack, including .NET Core, and leading teams in this area

Proven track record of successfully leading change initiatives

5+ years of experience working with high volume / high transaction revenue generating applications for business-to-business (B2B) and/or consumer facing scenarios

Strong understanding of DevOps and CI/CD pipeline automation

Strong understanding of cloud technologies

Strong knowledge of front-end frameworks and mobile development technologies

Strong understanding of established patterns of integrations with third party system through APIs and integration platforms

Strong understanding of outsourcing and offshoring and how to effectively utilize external resources as part of an overall staffing strategy

Experience with and passion for agile software development methodologies

Strong interpersonal skills. Able to collaborate effectively with peers, manage conflict, and facilitate architectural decisions.

Ability to rapidly learn new technologies and practices, mentor and coach others and foster a culture of technology innovation.

Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server to effectively partner with the Chief Data Architect

Understanding and working knowledge of Java is a plus

Understanding and working knowledge of ColdFusion is a plus

Experience in K-12 or Higher-Ed education is a plus
