In this vital role you will own the development and execution of the segments’ value proposition including responsibility for the comprehensive management of the home office underwriting and staff underwriting functions including the product development, risk management, and auditareas for Commercial Lines.The Chief Underwriting Officer will also be the driving force behind the development of corporate strategies, talent development, and the overall process and policies for our Commercial Lines team. 


Our ideal VP, Chief Underwriting Officer will be a skilled strategy and people leader, with 10 or more years of progressively responsible experience in P&C commercial lines underwriting.


As VP, Chief Underwriting Officer, you will:


Ensure appropriate best practices in underwriting and servicing of commercial policies are maintained in support of GuideOne business strategies.Directs all underwriting activities to produce a profit, contribute to company growth and diminish the possibility of loss.

Oversee Product Development and the Center for Risk Management operations, develops strategies for providing competitive product opportunities that complement GuideOne’s strategy and niche and develops ways to bolster overall bottom-line profitability.

Consistently challenge, improve and implement methodologies, procedures and technology to maximize efficiencies and effectiveness within the department. Maintain a strong P&C insurance industry network to remain current with industry best practices.

Profitably grow the book of business – with full Profit and Loss responsibility for church, senior living, non-profit and education products. Collaborate with various functional areas and functional leaders (Claims, Actuarial, Product Mangement, Underwriting, Sales, etc.) to author and develop business proposals and drive profitable growth.

Own and determine non-profit classes/groups GuideOne will serve.

Conduct pricing analyses and make pricing recommendations using available analytical tools.

Recommend and support marketing strategies, identifying synergies between existing lines of business to maximize product distribution, as well as new business opportunities that expand our current product portfolio and increase profitable revenue stream.

Analyse, reports on and prudently reacts to market conditions, competitive carrier intelligence information, program results, risk exposure, etc.

Analyse actuarial data to determine specific guidelines to improve loss ratios while working with sales to grow the top line.

Oversee the hiring and development of the appropriate commercial lines and staff operations employees. Develop leaders and staff who can drive innovation and growth. Develop workforce plans and monitors and recommends staffing levels. Recruit and select qualified staff and provides effective management of all direct reports. Lead through other managers. Promote staff morale and motivation, and provide one-on-one meetings to review performance and address issues.

Develop, monitor and maintain commercial budget. Monitor/manage expenditures to ensure compliance with approved budgetary and operational constraints.

Perform other related work as assigned.

Qualifications:


10 or more years of progressively responsible experience in a P&C commercial lines underwriting company, including experience in Non-Profit Education, Small Business and E&S markets.Experience in Church and/o r SLC market niches also strongly preferred.

7 or more years prior people leadership experience.

Experience leading modern underwriting technology platforms and lean operations.

Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance or related field, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Masters of Business Administration preferred.

CPCU, or IIA preferred.

Additional skills and abilities:


Well developed and deep knowledge in current commercial lines underwriting practices, operations and strategy.

Broad scope of expertise in emerging commercial lines underwriting concepts and procedures and knowledge of best practices of other carriers.

Keen ability to think and act strategically; planning for the long term while balancing the short and long range needs of the organization.

Proven ability to embraces and excel in a culture where a wide degree of accountability, business innovation, collaboration and creativity is expected.

Strong relationship building capabilities, project management skills, and ability to successfully lead a diverse team. Skilled in leading through other managers.
