The VP Global Medical Affairs Rare diseases is accountable to define the overall Global Medical Affairs strategy to support and develop the Ipsen Rare diseases portfolio in close collaboration with all Medical functions at Global and Local level, R&D and Commercial to improve patient outcomes. The VP Global Medical Affairs Rare diseases will oversee the development of integrated planning in Rare diseases aligned to our Asset strategies as well as shaping the broader Rare diseases franchise strategic planning.


Main responsibilities / job expectations


Define the overall Rare diseases Global Medical Affairs strategy for Ipsen to address unmet medical & patient needs


• Identify unmet medical and patient needs and assess their potential for Ipsen. Coordinate consolidation and analysis of insights from all internal and external key experts


• Closely monitor competitor medical and R&D activities and propose subsequent strategic response for Ipsen


• Investigate and challenge IDP options submitted by R&D or GEIP, assess their ability to meet targets (TPP)


• Accountable for expertEI/BD GMA contribution and capabilities building inRare diseases


• Oversees medical contributions to Rare Diseases asset teams


• Recommend long term targets in terms of which unmet medical / patient needs Ipsen should address, when and what it means in terms of Corporate investments


• Oversee design of TPPs in close collaboration with Asset team. Coordinate TPP review and update with Medical & R&D experts


• Present and recommend long term innovative strategic options to the CMO


• Co-owns knowledge transfer and External Medical Education with Medical Excellence group


Coordinate Rare diseases Medical Affairs Development and oversee development of Integrated Data Generation plans for Rare diseases Assets


• Follow-up advancement of all Medical Affairs activities in close cooperation with R&D, countries and Franchises; participate in steering committees, projects review, …


• Discuss / investigate / challenge early risk mitigation with R&D and Franchises


• Coordinate all medical aspects of product development plans from registration to post marketing, globally and locally


• Drive medical, cross functional and global alignment to enable early strategic alignment of medical affairs studies across global and local teams, in partnership with the Medical Asset leads, to ensure late phase data generation plans maximise data availability.


• Establish best practice data sharing.


• Anticipate necessary adjustments in GMA launch plans


Drive the design and implementation of late-stage development and studies (IIIb and IV phases)


• Design global articulation of late-stage developments & trials : global /local studies, ESS


• Provide guidelines on medical opportunities for further data generation through local and external sponsored studies in coordination with the VP Head of Data & Insight Generation


• Provide guidance and support to regions and countries on centers selection, synopsis & protocol design and in negotiation with external centers


• Participate to the MARB committee to evaluate relevance of trials for the development of the products


• Follow-up key clinical trials execution in coordination with internal / external CRO; Investigate eventual drifts or delays and subsequent corrective actions; provide regular feed-back about milestones achievement


• Ensure GCPs, Ethics and medical compliance are applied within all programs, and report to CMO on these matters; set-up and coordinate appropriate monitoring processes, in coordination with Medical Excellence organization and Regions/countries


• As a significant output in collaboration with the GMPC group, ensure team produces medical communication platforms with an enhanced value proposition.Ensure the role brings tangible patient and HCP value.


Develop and manage relationships with external stakeholders:


• Provide insights to Franchise Head and secure interactions with R&D to build the Rare diseases GMA KOL management plan


• Engage contacts with KOL, scientific societies and collaborative groups. Develop strong and sustainable relationships with them, in line with KOL management plan


• Spend a significant proportion of time outside Ipsen to represent the company in congresses, in any meetings with KOL or authorities


• Is accountable for managing the medical side of our key partnerships in Rare diseases (Genfit…)


Integrates and create a high performing team to execute the Rare diseases GMA strategy:


• Has overall responsibility for building and developing a team with ‘state of the art’ GMA skills and the required competencies in all areas of GMA activities


• Ensures the proper execution of the tasks and duties assigned to the teams under his / her responsibility


• Ensures proactive, effective and efficient communication and cross-functional working between the CMO group, R&D, Commercial and other key divisions of Ipsen


• Shares accountability for worldwide knowledge transfer in Rare diseases (with Medical Excellence and field medical)


Manage Rare diseases Global Medical Affairs budget


• Oversee Rare diseases Global Medical Affairs budget, from planning and reporting


• Manage projects prioritization within the budget  


• Provide strong insights for arbitration within the Rare diseases and more broadly the Ipsen portfolio


• Build strong medical business cases during new assets assessment


Knowledge, abilities & experience


Education / Certifications:


• MD Board certified


Experience:


• At least 15 years in pharmaceutical industry meanly in Medical Affairs and/or Clinical Development with successful product launches


• Strong experience of Due Diligence process


• Strong experience of managing high performing teams of physicians and scientists


Languages:


• Languages: Fluent in English

• Demonstrated ability to supervise highly competent Medical Affairs Directors or equivalents in a matrix and remote organization
