Position Purpose:

The Vice President of Merchandising is responsible for leading a cross-functional team to develop and execute market share gaining strategies while supporting initiatives to drive our Petco brand and our specialty vision.

Essential Job Functions: The incumbent must be able to perform all of the following duties and responsibilities with or without a reasonable accommodation: 

Through research, collaboration, and leadership create a compelling vision of the future for the respective merchandise categories that compels customers to choose Petco as their preferred pet destination.  

Lead cross-functional team and vendor partners to create and execute the most innovative product assortment and service offerings.Heavily emphasize private brand development and exclusive products to provide the best, most differentiated offering.  

Know our customer better then competition.Lead the team to make decisions based on customer data and insights, feedback and behavior.Leverage analytics to guide all business decisions.  

Set and deliver on financial goals.Deliver a track record of achievement.Ensure that near term strategies and tactics are in place, properly prioritized and well executed to always achieve/beat sales and margin budgets and market share goals. 

Collaborate across the entire business sharing best practices, resources and always making trade off decisions based on what’s best for Petco. 

Select, lead, engage (inspire), develop, and guide the cross-functional business unit team members to achieve the bold goals that support the vision and subsequent strategies.Develop a strong bench of talent capable of taking on roles across the business. 

Develop a strong partnership with the field organization to solicit input, ideas, feedback and advice as well as to gain incremental support and ultimate sponsorship for category initiatives. 

Develop, maintain and manage a high caliber team, providing leadership to direct reports and cross-functional teams. Build a team of partners that are recognized internally and externally as key contributors to Petco’s success. Offer clear, direct feedback and coaching to subordinates and team members.Ensure partners receive the job assignments, formal training, development experiences and exposure to leaders within the organization to equip them for effective job performance and career growth. Actively pursue the development of bench strength. 

Build and maintain strong partnerships with vendors.Represent Petco’s interests and negotiate on strategic needs and initiatives. 

Lead our business transformation passionately.Ensure that the business unit team is leveraging change to advance the business and achieve our ROI goals.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in business or related field is required.An MBA or other advanced degree is highly desirable.Qualified candidates will likely possess 15+ years of progressively responsible retail merchandising experience, including a minimum of 5 years at a senior management level with P&L responsibility. The successful candidate for the role of Vice President of Merchandising should bring the following knowledge, skills & abilities, and personal attributes to this position:

Broad and deep merchandising experience with a large, national retail specialty chain coupled with a proven track record of success in meeting and exceeding growth and profit objectives.Direct “big box category killer” experience is viewed as a distinct advantage;

An understanding of brand-building, customer-centricity, and proven leadership in building differentiated product offerings; Possesses experience in overseas sourcing and product development;
